Support Artists Designing Lights 4 the Temple@ )'(

It started with a big dream:

After 5 years of bringing music to Burning Man as my main gift to the community, in 2018 I helped light Josh Zubkoff’s 75-ft long Rainbow Bridge  -- a piece that was dearly treasured by Burners for its joy and radiance.

People of all ages lined up in the evening to write their message over the bridge or to make music that was visualized onto the bridge.  Proposals and weddings kept popping up to the cheers of dusty friends old and new. A friend shared with me their emotional moment of feeling SEEN when the trans flag color came on across the bridge.

Warm hearted connections like these repeated with friends and strangers alike inspired me to dream big  -- to dream of lighting up the spiritual heart of Burning Man, the Temple. To create a gentle companion to the sacred space of the Temple that echos Burners’ heartbeat as undulating currents of natural light--rhythmic and transcendent.  To draw the eyes up with progression so the extension of the body can bring relief and balance to the contraction of grief.

That big dream took a step toward reality when Geordie Van Der Bosch, architect of the Temple of Direction  invited me to join as a collaborator, and with my own team, design and engineer the art piece that would light the temple exterior.  Project Yomigae started to take form.

Support us if you feel our work is worthwhile

While the materials budget will be handled by the fundraising efforts of the Temple Builder through community support (please donate there if you're able), realizing this big dream fully and living up to the responsibility to the community requires a big time commitment from everyone on the Yomigae team.   Full time design work has been ongoing since March and on playa build will take at least 2 weeks before Burning Man gates open.  The personal financial consequences will be difficult.

Nevertheless we are happy to give with only the expectation of your joy when you see Yomigae at Burning Man.  And if you find our work worthwhile, our team of five would be grateful for any support.

An issue with systematic impact:

This situation is not unique to our team.  It is a result of our society valuing art as a commodity, but too often disregarding artists themselves and the creative process.

Even at Burning Man, where there is so much community enthusiasm and passion for investing in original creative thinkers, and supporting Radical Self-Expression on playa and off, we don’t address the fact that many marginalized artists don’t have the personal resources they need to express their creative vision.  Nor can they contribute at the same level as those with more ample financial means.

We are missing out on the unique insights of artists who don’t have the means to sacrifice their day jobs. And in order for our community to live up to its principle of Radical Inclusion, we need to change this.

In that vein, we are setting aside 10% of funds we raise for artists working on next year’s Burning Man Temple.
