Youth After Grenfell

This poem Perseverance Personified was written by spoken word artist Shareefa Energy, filmed and created by Amira Ibrahim as part of the Youth After Grenfell project with FerArts for the I-D magazine. 20 young creatives from the local community affected by the fire in Grenfell tower were given the opportunity to use photography to convey the truth and reality on the ground, which was then exhibited at the FerArts relaunch at the Design Museum. Shareefa wrote this spoken word piece to tell the story of Amanda Fernandez, the founder of FerArts who has been a strong force to support young creatives from the area to channel their trauma using photography and art which has proven to be beneficial in the healing process for those involved.
Amanda is one of the many people directly affected by the fire who lived in the walkways beneath Grenfell Tower and has been in a hotel for the last 11 months since the fire, which has taken its toll creating disorientation. FerArts is her baby and has been her safe space whilst not having a place to call home, her way of attempting to create some form of normality and refuge. FerArts supports creatives who breaks barriers, challenges stereotypes, bridges communities and promotes accessibility to arts and platforms emerging talent from backgrounds facing adversity. Before the fire, her organisation supported the work of over 250 young creatives across the UK and platformed the international collective of 42 creatives by promoting artists at 0% commission. Since the fire, this support continued and she engaged and worked with new young creatives who were severely impacted by the fire by providing them avenues and support and showing them an alternative method of processing this morbid reality. By opening her stream of networks, she is continuing to engage with the collective of young creatives through a number of aspirational upcoming projects over the next few years. The collective have taken the initiative to help fundraise to secure the continuation of these paramount projects.
In addition to running a pivotal organisation in the heart of our community, she is still facing the ongoing battle with local authorities regarding housing and the inquiry. So your support for FerArts would be greatly appreciated to remove a large stress from Amanda's shoulders.
As lead artist, Amanda founded the organisation six years ago on the ethos of supporting and engaging young creatives through platforming them through an emerging process which she self funded. She continues to be actively passionate about this so all the financial support you are able to contribute would be greatly appreciated by everyone at FerArts.
