Water Around The Oval(CSU to Flint)

Donation protected
This year CSU is participating in a special Edition of the annual "Cans Around the Oval food drive". CSU students, faculty and staff partner with community members, local media and area businesses to raise awareness and resouses for Flint Water Crisis by collecting Water and Money to the Food Bank of Eastern Michigan.

Students are attempting to organize the largest Northern Colorado effort to provide citizens with clean drinkable water. Collection Day will be April 7th, 10 a.m.-4 p.m., on the historic CSU Oval, when and where everyone on campus is encouraged to drop off donations. Additionally, there will be a presentation on Environmental Injustice given by Vance Payne, Kwon Atlas, Isaiah Martin and more commencing at Noon that day.

The top contributing organization or person will be recongized and given a trophy for their compassion. Total contribution will be valued by points. 1 point equaling $1 or 1 gallon of water. While donating phyiscal water is essential to the purpose of the fundraiser, raising money is paramount to being able to physically ship water as well as support the Food Bank in their own efforts to continue servicing the community.

The Flint water crisis is a drinking water contamination crisis in Flint, Michigan, United States that started in April 2014. After Flint changed its water source from treated Detroit Water and Sewerage Department water (which was sourced from Lake Huron as well as the Detroit River) to the Flint River (which Flint officials failed to apply corrosion control treatment to), its drinking water had a series of problems that culminated with lead contamination, creating a serious public health danger. The corrosive Flint River water caused lead from aging pipes to leach into the water supply, causing extremely elevated levels of lead. In Flint, between 6,000 and 12,000 children have been exposed to drinking water with high levels of lead and they may experience a range of serious health problems. The water change is also a possible cause of an outbreak of Legionnaires' disease in the county that has killed 10 people and affected another 77. (The Flint Journal via MLive, WNEM-TV 2016)

The Food Bank of Eastern Michigan serves as a common solicitor, storehouse and distributor of food on behalf of its Partner Agencies which are non-profit, charitable organizations serving those in need.

The Red Cross, Salvation Army, church pantries, are a few examples of the Food Bank’s partners.

If you live in the Northern Colorado area or are a CSU student or faculty member and want to get more involved in the planning and outreach of this event contact the CSU Black/African-American Cultural Center or Kwon Atlas.
