THE ULTIMATE ACTUALIST CONVENTION

This book is Edited by myself (Morty Sklar), Cinda Kornblum, and Dave Morice:
The Ultimate Actualist Convention: A Detailed View of Iowa City Actualism in the 1970s & 1980s and Its Migration to the San Francisco Bay Area.

Dear Friends and Fans,  as the founder (1975), editor and publisher of The Spirit That Moves Us Press, an independent publisher of poetry, short stories, essays and visual work, IRS-tax-exempt as a 501(c)(3) arts organization, we're raising money to publish this book, and ask for your help.
We're out of the loop now for grants because we haven't published for awhile. In our hey-day from 1975 to 2000 we received twenty-three grants from 1975 to 2000, from the National Endowment for the Arts and state arts agencies as well as other organizations.

This book is kind of the child of our 1977 The Actualist Anthology, published in our involvement in Iowa City from 1971 to 1989 where I'd been welcomed into a community of poets and independent literary magazine publishers outside the purview of the university.

We came to be known as the Actualists. My co-editor of The Actualist Anthology  and namer of Actualism, Darrell Gray, then inspired much Actualist activity in the San Francisco Bay area when he moved from Iowa City back to northern California in 1975.

Of The Actualist Anthology, the American Library Association's Booklist said: "A volume of interest as a record of and introduction to a purely American poetic movement."
Robert Bly said: “People looking for worlds their imaginations might bless.”

The expense of producing The Ultimate Actualist Convention is greatly reduced by our doing all the preparation, including typesetting and getting it ready for the printer. Also, the contributors of work to the book agreed to a traditional small-press payment of copies of the book, and that includes Whoopi Goldberg who created and performed pieces at Actualist Conventions in Berkeley in the early 1980s when she was a  member of the iconic theater company, the Blake Street Hawkeyes. (Of course Iowa is the Hawkeye state, from where Darrell Gray brought Actualism.)
