Study abroad in South Africa

Donation protected
Hello,  My name is Sarah Fleming and I am a student at Michigan State University. I am currently in my senior year double majoring in economics & community governance and advocacy while minoring in the African and African American Studies (AAAS) program here at MSU.  As political affairs director of the Black Student Alliance, president of natural hair organization Curlfriends, and Daughters of the Collective mentor
I am also quite involved on campus and hold many leadership positions. Being a first generation college student, I have many younger siblings, mentees, and family members looking up to me. Taking this opportunity to further my studies and broaden my horizon will not only benefit me, but it will also show those coming after me that nothing is impossible.

I have recently been granted the opportunity to study abroad in South Africa through my minor program. I will be immersed in real life contexts where I will directly examine, explore, and engage the 'African World View' in practice. The country provides a dynamic site for examining the intersections of race, identity and historical legacies that inform the country's current rapidly transformational political, cultural and economic structures. While on the trip, I will collaborate with higher education partners at the University of South Africa (UNISA) and other institutions. I will have the opportunity to conduct advanced field research. There will also be oppourtunities to work with South Africa’s communities and institutions in Pretoria, Johannesburg, Soweto and/or Venda and engage in important cultural, economic development and social justice initiatives.

The one roadblock holding me back from taking advantage of this amazing opportunity it the matter of cost, As stated before, I am a first generation college student coming from a single-parent household where a trip of this magnitude and cost is something one could only dream of, With that being said, If you are in a position to donate and assist me in my journey, please do so. Anything is genuinely appreciated!!

Total cost for the trip is approximately $6,500 with $500 of this contributing to costs such as passport and miscellaneous funds that I plan to cover myself. The remaining $6,000 is what I seek to raise which will include program fees, airfare, transportation, spending money, housing, and meals.

Please see itemized breakdown below:
Program fee:  $3250
Airfare:  $1800
Books & Class materials: $150
Meals: $200
Local transportation: $100
Spending money: $500

Again, I hope to raise $6,000 in total but every little bit helps.  <3
