STEM K-12 Pipeline Haiti Container Project:

                                Aquaponics Challenge

Our students love doing hands-on projects and are very enthusiastic about new challenges.

Our newest challenge is part of the Marietta High School K-12 Haiti Pipeline Container Project. In ELA, students will be building a hydroponics system with an emphasis on nutritional research, to be monitored during class. Our goal is to build on the hydroponics system, and compare it to our aquaponics system.

We try our best not to burden our parents and students with purchases for engineering challenges by encouraging students to engineer solutions utilizing common recyclable materials.

However, we are now embarking on a challenge where we need your support. We are seeking funding for students to create aquaponics systems that could be transported to Haiti, and replicated on a much larger scale, which will impact MILLIONS.

Hydroponics and aquaponics background information:

Hydroponics is a form of hydroculture and is a method of growing plants using nutrient solutions, in water, without soil.

Aquaponics refers to any system that combines conventional aquaculture (raising aquatic animals such as snails, fish, crayfish or prawns in tanks) with hydroponics (cultivating plants in water) in a symbiotic environment.

We will be donating and selling the food produced; vegetables and fish, from the aquaponics gardens to our community. Students are looking into partnering with a food pantry or community food bank, and helping those in need with fresh, local foods. The proceeds will be used to enhance the lives of those living in Haiti.

It is no small feat challenging students to expand their thinking to create their own methods, designs and solutions to such an enormous worldwide problem. The teamwork, critical thinking, perseverance and creative skills they learn and develop during this real world challenge will significantly impact their lives and gives them a real world perspective. This is where our STEM partners play an integral role in supporting our hands on STEM learning.

HATponics, the leader in aquaponics farming and sustainable agriculture education in the Southeast and at the forefront of sustainable agriculture development in East Tennessee and North Georgia and CEO Ryan Cox, have partnered with MMS in a humanitarian effort to continue feeding the world. HATponics has a goal of feeding 20 million people by 2020, and Marietta Middle plans to be a part of that goal!  HATponics provides custom-built aquaculture tanks with different types of grow beds, designed individually for the needs of each school. Each system is then installed on school property by the HATponics staff, accompanied by instructions on proper care and maintenance and education for students on the importance of sustainable agriculture. The students will be building the aquaponic tank with HATponics’ support. Our students will also be designing and programming, with coding, the computer equipment used to monitor our aquaponics gardens.
