Project: Trinity Kittens
Donation protected
This litter of kittens was found under the bushes at Trinity Lutheran Church in Commerce, TX. The mother was a feral cat and, from looks, not much older than 6-8 mos. herself. After learning of the kittens, my original intent was to catch the mother with the kittens however, after seven hours of waiting for her to return to a trap I set up, baited with her kittens, that intent ended in failure. So, I gathered the kittens then set a trap, baited with tuna, for the mother. I took the kittens home, put them in a warm/dry place (I found them under some bushes and the day I went to collect them it was raining and they were soaking wet), de-flead them and bottle fed them through the night. When we returned to check the trap the next day, we found the mother caught in the trap however, she was so feral, it would of been dangerous for us to handle her to the point of caring for her and getting her spayed/adopted so we took her to the Commerce Animal Shelter and left her along with a $20 donation. It is unfortunate and sad that this mother had to be removed from her kittens however, with her removed, the kittens will now be able to be socialized, house kept and litter trained which will make them great adoptable pets as opposed to their orignal fate which would of made them homeless, feral mothers (like their mom) or stray toms and, in both cases, future road kill or simply menaces to the neighborhood where they were found.
I strongly hesitated taking on this project; however, when I presented this problem to the church, the pastor confirmed that anyone willing to take on this project would be "doing the Lord's work" and how could I resist that. So, here I am, "doing the Lord's work".
I have taken the kittens to the vet in Commerce (who, BTW, did give me a discount and is a big supporter of the Animal Shelter - very good guy) for their initial exam to ensure they are healthy enough to merit this project. Dr. Thompson ensured they were still in pretty good shape, accounting for their history, and sent me home with antibiotics to clear a suspected respiratory infection (probably due to them being outside and in the cold rain at times), some eye ointment to clear up the discharge from their eyes (probably also linked to the respiratory infection), and de-wormer along wth some advice and instruction on how to raise them (I am more of a dog person - I know very little about cats/kittens).
The initial vet exam sealed my committment and I am now the head crusader of the Trinity Kittens Project and seeking others who could help me with this mission. First off (and the reason this plea is presented on GoFundMe) is the order of funds needed to complete this project.
This is my cost break down:
Donation to shelter (with mother) = $20
Flea Soap and Spray = $10.00
Vet Exam & vet meds = $80.06
meds: eye ointment, dewormer, & antiobiotic
Probiotics = $23.90 *
6 wk vaccines (8.67 ea. x 7) = $60.66
Kitten food (from now until adopted) = $107.20
Kitty Litter = $30
Spay 56.00 ea x 3 = $168.00
Neuter 28.00 ea x 4 = $112.00
GoFundMe Fees = $30
(deducted as % of each donation)
* Notes:
Kitten Food: I did choose an expensive formula (Science Diet); however, the vet assured me that is what was best for little tummies transitioning from milk to solid food and said that is what he uses for his own orphan kittens that are dropped off.
Probiotics: this was also something over and above that I don't normally do but also recommended by the vet to help during weaning transition and because of the antibiotics they had to be put on . Diarreah is a baby threat and killer so I took the vet's advice on this one too.
All this amounts to about $80/kitten which is a pricey amount to adopt a kitten. So, my plan is to re-coup as much of the cost as I can through donation then, divide the remainder by the # of kittens and collect that from those who want to adopt a kitten.
Any monetary help you can provide, would be greatly appreciated. But, if you can't help monetarily, my second plea is to ask for your help with soliciting for homes for these kittens. If you live in the Commerce / Dallas Metroplex area, please spread the word if you hear of anyone who may want a kitten and direct them to my GoFundMe or Facebook page so we can coordinate the details.
The kittens will be spayed/neutered on 7/7/16 and can go to their new homes shortly after that. Thank you all for your interest and support in this project. : )
