Kenton & Preston's Cider Stand to Cure Bile Duct Cancer
In 2022 our grandpa, Dr. James K. Welling, was diagnosed with inoperable bile duct cancer, also known as cholangiocarcinoma. It is a rare, aggressive, incurable cancer in the slender tubes that carry the digestive fluid (bile) through the liver. The news was surprising, confusing, and heart wrenching, as our "walking medical wonder" grandpa had survived many trials with his health over the years, yet was always able to overcome them with his tenacious spirit and grateful heart. But we were told this trial would be different, and he was given only months to live.

Our grandpa was so strong and fought as hard as he could for ten months, undergoing chemotherapy and immunotherapy treatments with his stellar Northwestern team. We clung to hope in our hearts, but sadly, Grandpa had to say goodbye on June 3, 2023. Now that he is in heaven, we pledge to continue fundraising in his honor and to keep hope alive for current and future patients and families affected by this devastating disease.

So in recognition of Grandpa's hard-fought battle and hope for a much-needed cure, please join us by raising a cup of apple cider on Saturday, October 5, 2024.

KENTON & PRESTON'S CIDER STAND TO CURE BILE DUCT CANCER

SATURDAY, OCTOBER 5, 2024

Proceeds go directly to the Cholangiocarcinoma Foundation (CCF), whose mission is to find a cure and improve the quality of life for those affected by cholangiocarcinoma (bile duct cancer). CCF has grown to become the leading global resource in research, education, and public awareness. This is the fourth fundraising year for the cider stand, with $161 raised in 2021 for the BeTheMatch organization (in honor of our grandma's cancer and resulting stem cell transplant), $419 raised for cancer research at Northwestern in 2022, and $3,135 for CCF in 2023. *UPDATE FOR 2024* This year's goal is to raise $1,000, and if we do, a generous CCF donor will MATCH that amount! Funds raised over $1,000 and up to $1,500 will be DOUBLED!!

Help Fight Cholangiocarcinoma in Memory of Mom
My mom went to Northwestern Medicine (McHenry) on March 31st, 2024 due to experiencing extreme weakness and a lack of appetite. In the ER, they did an abdominal CT scan where they found a liver mass measuring approximately 10x9cm. They also found that my mom’s kidneys were not functioning properly due to elevated creatinine levels. After these findings, she was admitted into the hospital where she stayed for the next two weeks. During her stay, they biopsied the liver and input a drain to clear her infection.

We found out on April, 4th that mom had squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) of the liver, a diagnosis the oncologists said was extremely rare and unlikely. After two months of back and forth from those same oncologists at Northwestern, them continuously telling us that they needed to track down the primary source of cancer before starting treatment (because it couldn’t possibly be the rare cancer they originally told us it was), endless testing and multiple trips to the ER due to her need for blood transfusions, we decided to switch her treatment to Good Shepherd (Barrington). Based on all of the extensive testing NWM put her through previously, the doctors there immediately diagnosed her with SCC cholangiocarcinoma (bile duct cancer), with metastasis to the liver and femur. They also definitively (& finally) told us that it was stage 4 cancer and terminal, with a very poor prognosis. They had a plan to start palliative treatment within the next week due to the amount of pain my mom was experiencing. This would be a short course of radiation over a two week period.

This obviously took a turn due to my mom’s increased weakness and inability to travel to and from doctor appointments without falling. Because of this risk, she was placed at Wauconda Care in hopes that rehabilitation would help build her strength. They discharged her after a short two weeks, stating that she was doing most everything independently, though this was vastly different from what we as a family saw (we did appeal their decision to discharge, though this was rejected due to their staff reports to insurance). And sure enough, within two days of being home, she was transported via ambulance back to Good Shepherd ER due to falling and hitting her head while trying to leave her home for her first radiology appointment.

While there, they found a plethora of other issues along with further metastasis to her spine and ribcage, and significant growth of her liver mass. On her second day there, mom started showing more severe cognitive issues; staring off into space, slurring words, speaking “gibberish”, not remembering basic information, etc. Due to this, they did a brain MRI while in the hospital to see if metastasis to the brain was occurring. They did find a new lesion lining the area between her brain and skull, which they told us was indicative of cancer cells infiltrating the brain. At this time we decided to change the palliative treatment plan to one longer radiation session to both the femur and liver before entering hospice through JourneyCare and bringing her home to rest.

On Friday, June 28th, she came home, where she wanted to be. Many family members came to visit with her that weekend, sharing stories, bringing meals and helping with her care. We played 80s music, danced, laughed and cried. She was her sassy and funny self until she no longer could be. Mom passed on July 2nd at 3:55 pm, with me and my grandma by her side. She was very much at peace.

It was a difficult 3 month journey that went by way too quickly. We hope that your donation to The Cholangiocarcinoma Foundation will help researchers find new and better ways to treat this rare form of bile duct cancer, to extend the lives of those affected while maintaining the quality of their time left, and spread awareness to not only the public, but to oncologists who aren’t as familiar with treating this type of cancer. To put it in perspective, only 12 other cases of this specific cholangiocarcinoma have been reported since the 1930’s, so information right now is extremely limited.

Please take care of yourselves, both mentally and physically. Advocate for yourself and your loved ones, and hold doctors accountable. Our healthcare system doesn’t care enough, so it is our job to do so.

With approximately 10,000 cases a year being diagnosed in the United States, cholangiocarcinoma is the second most common primary liver cancer in the world. It is often diagnosed at advanced stages when treatment is only minimally effective, emphasizing the imminent need for novel therapies.

The Rebecca Ramble is a 5k/party in memory and celebration of Rebekka Sprouse, and a fundraiser for the Cholangiocarcinoma Foundation.

Rebekka was an expert relaxer:)

She biked and ran a bunch, but she really excelled in relaxing. A book, a beer, or maybe just some low-brow TV after a jog made Rebekka about the happiest camper you've ever seen.

At age 31 Rebekka developed an advanced and untreatable case of cholangiocarcinoma, and she passed from the disease several months later. The Rebekka Ramble is an annual celebration of Rebekka and a fundraiser for cholangiocarinoma research.

The Rebekka Ramble is a 5K walk/run/party, a celebration and a fundraiser for the Rebekka Sprouse Cholangiocarcinoma Fund.

The Rebekka Sprouse Cholangiocarcinoma Fund was established to fund research into cholangiocarcinoma, with proceeds now benefiting The Cholangiocarinomca Foundation.

Rebekka developed an advanced, untreatable case of cholangiocarcinoma, a cancer of the bile ducts, at age 31, and she passed from the disease several months later. The overwhelming majority of cases progress in the same way; no effective treatment is known.

Small amounts of money make big differences for rare and understudied cancers, as it allows for research that otherwise would simply not occur.

David & Spiker's Marathon Fundraiser for George
Hello all - David Mango and Spiker Hayden here. We will be running the NYC marathon this year, a process that started in 2019 and was derailed by COVID. Butttttt we are back and ready to RUN.

We both collectively wanted to raise awareness and donations for Cholangiocarcinoma research (bile duct/pancreatic cancer). Our good friend, George Christie, passed away from Cholangiocarcinoma in 2021 at the young age of 29. George was universally loved. He had an infectious personality and an innate ability to befriend all those he met. He was the life of every party and the energy in every room. He was a loving husband to his wife, Sarah, an exemplary son to his parents, and a caring brother to his siblings, Sam, Emma, and his twin brother, Ollie. George truly was an incredible person and we miss him dearly. George was a permanent fixture in our lives, as we all grew up together in Connecticut, attended the same high school, and the same college.

Cholangiocarcinoma has a low survival rate and like many forms of rare cancer is wildly underfunded. We are raising in honor of George's memory and for the Cholangiocarcinoma Foundation. The foundation has been doing amazing work and we are confident that every dollar raised will be going towards the fight.

Mango here - I'm only running one of these EVER so please open up your hearts (and wallets) to the cause because I won't be asking for money again. My goal is to complete the marathon in 3:30, but as an added incentive if I finish in under 3:15 I will personally donate $1,500 to our fundraising goal.

Spiker here - We're excited to be running in honor of George. Hope to see your faces out there on game day.

Lilly passed in February of 2021.

Since then, I've been doing a lot of soul searching. Life has been beyond difficult without her around, to say the least. She was everything to me, my whole world. Every day I wake up, every time I go to sleep...I find myself asking the same questions- why her? why me? what could she have possibly done to deserve this? she was so young, healthy, amazing, beautiful and pure...WHY?! I don't think I will ever understand Lilly's passing. The pain runs as deep as my love for her. Cancer will continue to take innocent lives and leave loved ones left behind devastated. However, I still have plenty of fight left in me and a new perspective on life. As deeply wounded as I am, I refuse to go down without a fight. In light of this tragedy, I have made the decision to dedicate my fighting career in honor of Lilly.

I recently made my return on 12/4/21 and secured a victory after taking time away from the sport to support Lilly in her cancer battle. Moving forward I will do everything in my power to fight for a cure. I will continue to fight for those who no longer can.

I hope I am making you proud Lilly. I love you and miss you so so so much, always and forever.

Gofundme informed me that they would be unable to maintain/reactivate Mason’s juice fundraising page so I am starting another one. (I will add his awesome video outlining his story soon!)

Through Mason’s hard work and inspiration, as well as the wonderful people at Inheritance Juicery, we’ve already raised $11,050 (thank you thank you) for the cholangiocarcinoma foundation!!! That means we need ~20k more to meet Mason’s goal.
