Ergathon 2024 on the books! The whole team did a great job getting to their goal - see below for the updated pics from this year!

The Oakland United Rowing annual Ergathon will be on Sunday, November 17, this year and it is the largest fundraising event of the year for our youth Program. Oakland United Rowers and East Bay Rowing Club Masters will show up to go the distance on the ergometer to support the youth program!

Join us in reaching our goal of $35,000 to make the sport of rowing accessible to high-school aged youth in the Oakland Unified School District (OUSD). Come watch the kids row on the erg and cheer them on to meet their distance (and fundraising!) goals. Much of the funding earned will be used for need-based scholarships and programs to support kids from diverse backgrounds (including nutritional needs, swim lessons, and transportation). See details about specific costs for equipment and registration below. Your support will help us get as many students on the water as possible.

Oakland United Rowing is one of only three rowing programs who focuses on recruiting from public high schools on the West Coast. East Bay Rowing Club (EBRC), a non-profit 501(c)(3), established the high school team to promote the sport of rowing in Oakland. The team is open to all OUSD and Oakland area 8th-grade and high school students. We are committed to the personal, athletic and academic excellence of each rower. We strive to be competitive while also prioritizing every athlete’s skill development in leadership, collaboration, and mental fortitude.

To provide context about costs to run the program:

8+ Shell: $26,000–$50,000

4+ Shell: $25,000

1-Year Youth Scholarship: $2200

1- Coxbox: $1100

Ergometers: $1,000 each

Oars: $500 each

Race Fee: $250/race (Juniors attend 6 races annually)

Microphones: $150 each

Shell lights: $110 per set

Uniform: $90

The East Bay Rowing Club and its youth rowing program, Oakland United Rowing, is the home of rowing in Oakland and the communities of the East Bay. With a mission of "Changing Lives One Stroke at a Time", we serve as a model for the successful integration of top-notch rowing and true inclusivity by reflecting the diversity of our community in the East Bay.

Rowing is the ultimate team sport. As a Club, our success depends on all rowers giving their greatest possible effort together in perfect unison on and off the water. At EBRC, we believe that every member of the Oakland community deserves the opportunity to develop life-long fitness, mental health and social benefits through the elements of recreational and competitive rowing. We believe our members are capable of greatness when we provide them with opportunities and support, and we rely on community support to make life-changing outdoor experiences affordable and accessible for all.

The ultimate challenge is making rowing accessible to everyone through reasonable fees, a youth program and scholarships while building a fleet of equipment for both our masters and youth rowers. With this fundraising effort, Competition for a Cause, we hope to raise enough funds to replace all compromised launches and to add to our fleet of boats and new equipment. Representing the EBRC Novices in the fundraiser Competition for a Cause is The Unicorn Express! We're excited to join this incredible initiative to support the mission of the East Bay Rowing Club's: "Changing Lives One Stroke at a Time". The mission is very important to us and we're proud to make a difference in the lives of East Bay youth and adults through the sport of rowing. The Unicorn Express hopes to raise $10,000 by April 1, 2024 for the initiative Competition for a Cause. The funds from this initiative will allow us to acquire equipment for our youth and adult programs that makes rowing accessible to all regardless of ability to pay. Over 60 rowers, ranging in age from 20 to 80 somethings, can be found on the Oakland Estuary before sunrise four mornings each week, year round. We are EBRC’s Morning Masters rowers. Some rowed in high school or college; others learned to row in middle life or after retirement. Many race for EBRC, squeezing into blue and green spandex uniforms to bring home medals. All are committed to EBRC’s mission of “Changing Lives One Stroke at a Time.”

EBRC is a non-profit organization providing equipment and scholarships for Oakland United Rowing (the youth rowing program for Oakland and East Bay high school students) and adult Masters Rowing programs. EBRC is a community-focused rowing club, integrating top-notch rowing and inclusivity to reflect the diversity and values of our East Bay home in Oakland. No matter how diverse our lives and rowing skills are, we share the belief that by working together we can achieve strength, power, grace and beauty.

EBRC is excited to share that Oakland United Rowers (OUR) - formerly known as Oakland Tech Rowing - has received a $10,000 grant award from the Olympic Club Foundation toward the purchase of equipment that will strengthen the college recruiting potential of OUR students. The Olympic Club Foundation is a local 501c3 whose mission is to financially support programs that share the belief that participation in organized athletics enriches young lives and develops future community leaders.

OUR Coaches and combined 3-time Olympians Erin Cafaro and Ann Strayer have spent extensive time researching our rowers’ college recruiting potential and found that because we are generally a smaller rowing club, the best way for our student-athletes to be noticed by potential college rowing recruiters is to showcase our athletes in smaller boats. This means entering our athletes in races of smaller boats: quads, doubles and singles. To make this possible we need the necessary equipment for OUR.

We are grateful for the generous investment in OUR by the Olympic Club, and we ask you to join us in reaching our goal to raise the remaining $31,000 by February 15 to purchase small rowing shells (double/pair and quad/four). With this money, we will be able to fully purchase the equipment necessary to put OUR athletes in the best possible position to be recruited to college programs.

East Bay Rowing Club (EBRC), a non-profit 501(c)(3), established Oakland Tech Rowing to promote the sport of competitive rowing for all students at Oakland Technical High School.

Oakland Tech Rowing is one of only three public high school crew teams on the west coast. The rowing team is open to all OUSD high school students, and no prior rowing experience is required. The team strives to be competitive while also prioritizing every athlete’s skill development in leadership, collaboration and mental fortitude.

Last season, several members of the OT Varsity Team participated in Scholastic Nationals in Mercer County, New Jersey - a first for OT! We hope to continue to grow as a nationally competitive team.

EBRC provides knowledge, support, and equipment to keep the OT Rowing program alive, but that requires funding for the cost of boats, oars, coaching, travel, and scholarships. The OT Rowing program receives no funding from the school district, and relies on contributions from parents, friends, and families.

This is a phenomenal team of athletes who work hard and excel at this sport. They put in long hours of training throughout the school year, learning to work together and pushing one another to be their best. Their committed coaches join them five days a week; we even row in the rain and the dark through the winter months.

We are committed to making rowing and the opportunities it provides accessible. This includes giving every student who wants to row a chance to do so, regardless of the family’s ability to pay.

We sponsor rowers in need with partial and full scholarships to promote DEI and access to rowing.

The annual Oakland Tech Erg-a-thon, which will be held on October 17 in Jack London Square, is one of the main sources of support for the OT Rowing program. This event will help the team expand its equipment, help the Oakland community learn more about Oakland Tech’s blossoming rowing program, and support crucial need-based scholarships and programs for kids from all socioeconomic backgrounds.
