The reports coming out of India are grim. The second wave of the pandemic has wreaked havoc on the country. Several mutated strains of the virus are indiscriminately attacking its people, young and old, including babies. There is a severe shortage of medicines, vaccines, and oxygen. Dying gasps of people waiting for oxygen on sidewalks and parking lots, lifeless bodies piled up on funeral pyres waiting to be cremated, despondent families running from pillar to post in search of hospital beds for their loved ones, exhausted doctors having to make heartbreaking choices of whom to save and whom to let go - these dystopian scenes are the reality across several states in India currently. Panic, fear, loss, and grief are rampant.

The situation is apocalyptic. Many countries and organizations have stepped up to help India, but the need is massive, urgent, and widespread. Sadly, when every strata of society is struggling, aid to the poorest and lowliest often takes a backseat. These are the people Ekam India is supporting.  Dr. Saha and I have worked with Ekam for many years now and know that their boots on the ground work at the grassroots level tending to those most in need.

Ekam is receiving requests from hotspots all over the country and has divided the needs into 3 categories - immediate, intermediate, and long term.

Immediate needs involve:

1.    Meeting critical needs of health centers with reinforcement of COVID prevention and treatment supplies and lifesaving equipment. Also, providing local hospitals and village primary health centers with 
PPE kits
N-95 masks
sanitizers
Pulse oximeters



2.     Providing nutrition and hygiene kits to identified families who have no means of income.

 EMERGENCY NUTRITION KITS with dry rations for 1 month help families of 4 and contain

protein-rich food
cooking supplies
immunity boosters- vitamin C
Seeds and materials to start their own vegetable garden for sustainability


2.  COVID PROTECTION HYGIENE KITS for COVID prevention and protection contain

Gandhi Global Alumni, Gandhi medical college, Hyderabad in collaboration with Ekam foundation is working to fight  Covid-19 in Telangana region. Rural Telangana has been hit hard during second wave. There is minimal health care access and lack of education and awareness.


Till now, we have embarked, individually on this mission at village level only with limited funds we got. One of our mission is expanding health care delivery and community outreach programs to rural and underserved areas.

We will start our pilot project by adopting one Mandal/PHC level and expand based on the funds we raise.


·   Support to regional hospitals and rural primary care centers by providing necessary medical equipment, pulse oximeters, contact less thermometers


.   Providing personal protective equipment to all health care personnel in PHC and subcenters, area hospitals with N95s, face shields, sanitizer, gloves, gowns     


.    Education about prevention methods, home care for mild to moderate cases, role of vaccination (eg: Bill boards, pamphlets/ fliers, posters)


·     Village level coordination with local HF(Health Facilitators)


·     Medical officer, ANM and ASHA workers involvement


.     Establishing Telehealth platform to educate all health care workers and support them in patient care

Please note Ekam foundation has been offering service in rural area’s particularly for women’s health and reduce infant mortality. Ekam will support us in this project with their team and provide us with accountability, ensure funds are 100% utilized for this cause.

BACKGROUND:
Gandhi Medical College and Hospital, a tertiary level government hospital in the heart of Telangana state, India. This hospital serves close to 15 million population & is now exclusively serving COVID patients. Most of the patients are from underserved areas and are low-income population & don’t have the income source to get private care. With the rising COVID cases, the healthcare staff has been putting their lives at risk while many others are sick from COVID already. All ventilator beds are filled to the capacity & many more needed as COVID situation spiking in this location. More than 20 people per day are dying just due to insufficient resources like lack of CPAP / BIPAP and high flow oxygen and many more due to complications of COVID.

On the other side, conditions in rural communities are very dire with poor healthcare access especially at Primary Health Centers and so as their resources being stretched and doctors working nonstop with exhaustion. 

Our organization is working in association with non-profit EKAM foundation (USA & India). 

OUR PRIMARY GOALS: Support Gandhi Hospital and Rural Communities to fight COVID with the help of EKA M foundation with an approach to prevent, Protect, Monitor, Manage and Educate.

- Provide critical care/medical equipment to Gandhi hospital, surrounding district hospitals and primary health centers that are overburdened with COVID patients. 

·         Oxygen concentrators

·         HFNCs/ nasal cannulas 

·         CPAP/BiPAP machines

·         EKG machines

·         Pulse oximeters

- Ensure safety of health care workers by providing personal protective equipment (and supporting families so that patient care is fully rendered)

·         Sanitizers, N95 masks, Surgical masks, Reusable hard face shields, Gloves, Protective goggles


- Expanding health care delivery and community outreach programs to rural and underserved areas with the help of the following:

·         Education about prevention methods, home care for mild to moderate cases, role of vaccination (eg: Bill boards, pamphlets/ fliers)

·         Village or Sarpanch level coordination

·         Rural medical practitioners/ANM workers involvement

·         Support to regional hospitals and rural primary care centers
