Did you know that every two minutes, a woman dies from complications during childbirth. In 2018 alone, 300,000 mothers died, that’s over 800 per day.

Also, in the U.S., one in three women describes their childbirth experience as traumatic. That’s why this Mother’s Day, we’re running 5 km to support Every Mother Counts, a nonprofit organization to make pregnancy and childbirth safer, especially for mothers in need.

We believe every Mom deserves a safe and respectful pregnancy. Even the smallest donation would help.

a little give Supports: Every Mother Counts
I am Rachel, the creator of a little give. I started a little give first to spread some fun but also to inspire giving to an organization that is tackling some of the current issues with women's healthcare. I realize how lucky I have been to have had easy access to high-quality health care, especially maternity care. Many women in the US and around the world are not as lucky.

In the US, over a third of our counties are maternity care deserts, meaning there is not a single birthing facility or obstetric clinician in the area. Globally, 1 woman dies every 2 minutes due to pregnancy or childbirth complications. Almost all of these deaths could have be prevented with access to quality healthcare.

Every Mother Counts is working to improve maternity care in the US and around the world. EMC is raising awareness about the maternal health crisis, investing in community-based solutions, and mobilizing for policy change. Help Mothers Get the Care They Deserve!
Hi, my name is Jana Karam, an aspiring OB/GYN, and a current postdoctoral research fellow at Mayo Clinic in Women's Health Department. I am passionate about improving maternal healthcare for underserved communities. I’ve seen firsthand how barriers to care—such as transportation, lack of access to providers, and limited resources—affect the health of mothers and babies, particularly in rural and low-income neighborhoods.

Every mother deserves quality care, but for many women in underserved communities, that care is out of reach.

In rural areas, low-income neighborhoods, and communities of color, access to prenatal and postnatal care remains a significant challenge. Women in these areas face higher rates of maternal and infant mortality, not due to a lack of care, but because they don’t have access to the care they need.

But we can change that!

I am raising funds to support initiatives that will:

-Provide mobile health clinics for underserved communities, offering essential prenatal and postnatal checkups, screenings, and health education.

-Fund transportation services to help women get to vital prenatal and postnatal appointments.

-Create and distribute maternity care packages, which include prenatal vitamins, baby clothes, and information on maternal health.

Together, we can help ensure that every mother has access to the care she deserves during pregnancy and after childbirth, regardless of where she lives or her socioeconomic status.

Reduce Maternal Mortality
My mitzvah project focuses on maternal mortality in connection with my Torah portion. My Torah portion, Vayishlach, involves the death of Rachel in childbirth. Before her death, she names her son Ben-oni, child of my suffering. Her husband Jacob changes the baby’s name to Benjamin, child of my right hand. Rachel’s death and Jacob’s actions inspired me to focus on maternal mortality for my mitzvah project.

In Rachel’s time her death may have been unpreventable, but in our time most maternal deaths can be prevented. The United States is one of the countries that has the ability to prevent maternal mortality, yet has one of the highest mortality rates of all high resource nations.

Maternal mortality is such an important issue because many women’s concerns are not heard during pregnancy, birth or postpartum.The organization I’m supporting, Every Mother Counts, focuses on making sure women’s concerns are heard during this time and advocates for countries around the world to provide better care during pregnancy, birth, and postpartum.

Nice News’ May 2023 Cause of the Month
An estimated 287,000 women worldwide die every year as a result of complications of pregnancy and childbirth — and almost all of those deaths can be prevented with “quality, respectful, and equitable maternity care.” With Mother’s Day approaching, Nice News hopes you will join the fight to change that statistic by supporting Every Mother Counts through our May Cause of the Month fundraiser.

The nonprofit, founded in 2010, “envisions a world where all women have the opportunity to enter motherhood and not only survive, but thrive,” and operates based on four key principles: placing mothers at the center, strengthening healthcare workforces, facilitating access to resources, and advancing proven models of care.

So far, Every Mother Counts has invested over $24 million in public education, community engagement, and grantmaking; touched the lives of more than 1 million people (including women, babies, health workers, and community members); and released dozens of educational films on the topic of maternal health care.

One hundred percent of the proceeds from this fundraiser will go directly to Every Mother Counts and its mission to make childbirth safe for every mother, everywhere — you can read more about the organization’s work here.

This organization is dedicated to make pregnancy and childbirth safer for every mother, especially the ones that aren’t financially stable.
