Surviving abuse is financially devastating. According to the CDC, it costs female survivors $104K to deal with the consequences of abuse over their lifetime. 99% of survivors are subjected to economic abuse as part of the violence they experience—which occurs when a harm-doer controls a survivor’s financial resources. Survivors report having an average of $289 that they alone can access, and only an average of $10 in savings.
FreeFrom's mission is to create pathways to financial security and safety for survivors of gender-based violence so they can thrive and live free from abuse.
With your generous support, FreeFrom will be able to:
- Provide survivors with cash assistance through our Safety Fund, Savings Matching Program, and our thriving social enterprise, GIFTED;
- Advocate for state and federal legislation that strengthen survivors' financial security to make widespread change;
- Bring banks, employers, and entire industries in to play their part in the movement to end gender-based violence;
- Resource and foster a culture of abundance and innovation across the movement;
- Produce survivor-led storytelling and first-of-its-kind research to transform the narrative on gender-based violence and inspire action.
- FreeFrom’s work comes out of a lineage of activism, and we are one part of an expansive movement to end gender-based violence. The kind of systems change we seek requires patience and an unwavering focus on our goal—a prosperous and safe future in which everyone is free to live out their full potential.
THE WINS
Over the past 8 years, FreeFrom has:
- Disbursed over $2.2MM in more than 8,800 emergency cash grants directly to survivors in all 50 states and Puerto Rico through our Safety Fund;
- Supported 1,966 survivors and counting in saving over $823K through our national Savings Match Program. The program supports survivors in building emergency savings of $1,440 over a year by matching their monthly savings up to $55/month with a $120 sign-up bonus;
- Built a growing social enterprise, GIFTED, that has generated over $2.6MM in income for survivors through entrepreneurship and living wage work;
- Introduced landmark federal legislation into Congress intended to study and address economic abuse occurring in financial institutions;
- Set the roadmap for state policy action and successfully changed policy to support the financial security of over 12 million survivors in the U.S.;
- Helped 300K+ workers gain safe leave through our corporate advocacy, so survivors can take time off work to deal with the consequences of abuse;
- Drove the national conversation on gender-based violence as a systemic, economic issue by publishing 8 reports, which have been cited by federal agencies, cities, states, and the Biden-Harris Administration; and
- Launched our documentary, SURVIVOR MADE, sharing stories of survivors’ joy and resilience to shift the narrative on survivorship from pain to possibility.
