60 Years of Skiing the View!
It was December 28th, 1963 when our hill came alive. The opening of Big Squaw Mountain provided the people of Greenville, Maine a place to gather and socialize, ski and play. Winters at Moosehead are long. The snow is deep and the views are incomparable.
It is commonly said that you don't know what you've got until it's gone. For many, that happened in 2004 when our only summit lift was lost and the hotel closed shortly after. The feeling was even more apparent in 2010 when the doors to the lower mountain closed too.
Time stood still for the next few years, but the trees did not. Mountain visits were somber as nature took hold. In 2012, emotions were turned into community action and plans were made. After thousands of hours of volunteer labor, thousands more in donations, the lower lift was relicensed, the lower trails cleared and the original base lodge revitalized.
Today, while we continue to service the lower mountain for the next generation, the upper mountain feels within our grasp. RIGHT NOW Granite State Land Management is here clearing the Penobscot, St Croix and Piscataquis trails from 19 years of growth. We are hopeful to raise enough money to bring back the Moose River trail too for top to bottom runs. Highly specialized mulching equipment is already on site, but the funding is not. This campaign will be used to bring the Moose River back to skiable condition and purchase alpine mowing equipment that our staff will use to manage and maintain the vegetation from season to season.
Please understand that this goal is an essential step in shaping the future of our mountain. Know that there is a special place here for people like you. It's all about keeping the dream alive.
