The Hannah Project Freedom School 2023!
Please join me in raising funds to support The Hannah Freedom School this summer. Now in its 14th year, the Hannah Freedom School is a full-day (6) six-week summer literacy enrichment program for low-income children of color in grades 2-8 in Marin County. Our goal is to raise $150,000 so that 150 children in our community can participate in the Hannah Freedom School this summer.

Not just a summer literacy program, the Hannah Freedom School is part of a movement to bring about change in the way black and brown students are educated in the country. We want our children to be equipped with the knowledge and appreciation of their artistic, moral and spiritual heritage. We want them to know their past and be armed with the resilience and fortitude to achieve their dreams - something inside so strong.

We offer high-quality academic enrichment through our research-based, multicultural social justice and conflict-resolution curriculum known as the Integrated Reading Curriculum (IRC).

We focus on Parent and family development through weekly parent meetings, frequent family check-ins, engagement opportunities, competitions, and more!

We integrate civic engagement and social action through lessons about social action and participation in our National Day of Social Action (NDSA), during which all Freedom Schools students nationwide participate in a collective action to bring about social change.

We promote nutrition, health and mental health by sharing knowledge and resources for accessing food, mental health care and other basic needs.

Please donate today to ensure the needs of our children remain front and center as our community confronts the parallel crises of systemic racism. Tests have shown more than 85% of Hannah Freedom School scholars experience no summer reading loss and 76% actually have fluency and comprehension gains of more than six months.

This year more than ever, the Hannah Project's Freedom School is needed to provide students with a crucial summer learning experience. The achievement gap between students of color and white students is persistent and pernicious and is likely to increase even further given the current situation requiring distance learning. The Hannah Project's Freedom School is the summer school program in Marin City and we need your help to ensure that every student who wants to attend, is offered a spot.

In its 10th year, the Hannah Project's Freedom School provides an impactful, literacy-based summer experience for students of color that is steeped in providing them with a rich and culturally responsive educational experience while empowering their sense of voice. The program is based in Marin City and is rooted in social justice, building upon the idea that children can make a difference, both in themselves and in their world.

The six-week program, open to all low-income Marin County children, is run by the Hannah Project, who works closely with its local partner organizations, the Sausalito-Marin City School District, The Boys and Girls Club, Play Marin, The Community Services District, and Bridge the Gap to ensure that all local children have access to summer opportunities. The Hannah Freedom School is made up of five essential components:

· High-Quality Academic and Character-Building Enrichment
·       Parent and Family Involvement
·       Civic Engagement and Social Action
·       Intergenerational Servant Leadership Development
·       Nutrition, Health, and Mental Health

The Hannah Freedom School is equal parts academic achievement and personal empowerment, with students learning to love reading, gaining an average of 1 ½ grade levels during the last year’s six week program.

Freedom School teachers are college students and recent college grads called Servant Leader Interns. Of the 20+ college students who have worked at the Hannah Freedom School, eight of them are pursuing careers as teachers or educational administrators—creating a much-needed pipeline of educational professionals of color.

This year, the Hannah Freedom School is dedicated to providing approximately 150 students in grades K-8 with a rich, culturally relevant summer experience. Given the unknowns regarding Covid-19, Hannah is exploring options to be sure to be able to offer the program this summer.* Join us today to ensure that our local students are able to participate in this powerful and effective program. $1,500 sponsors a student scholar, while also providing college students with meaningful summer employment. Donations of any level will help reach our goal of ensuring that every eligible child is able to attend the Hannah Children's Defense Fund Freedom School this summer.
