I’m helping raise money to send 10 Liberty City young men, ages 17 to 21, on an inspirational trip of a lifetime: to the Obama Foundation’s first ever My Bother’s Keeper Rising! Conference, February 18 to 20 in Oakland, CA.
It may be happening clear across the country from South Florida, but as always…there’s a Miami connection! Cecilia Gutierrez, the former Executive Director of The Miami Children’s Initiative, now works for the Obama Foundation. She recently had a chance meeting with President Obama in, of all places, an elevator ride. Acting quickly and boldly, Cecilia asked the President if he would take time to meet a Liberty City youth delegation if she was able to get them to attend the MBK conference, which he too was planning to attend. Inspired by the gutsy ask, Obama said YES!
A formal invitation for the young men to meet the former President and attend the conference—which celebrates and promotes ways to build strong, lasting bridges of opportunity for boys and girls, young men and young women of color—came soon after. And now, we’re raising money to help them get there. We need $15,000 to cover the cost of the airfare and hotel stay.
The Key Biscayne Community Foundation (where I work at Executive Director) stepped in to kick things off and start spreading the word. So did the Chief Press Foundation, a non-profit set up by Key Biscayne Chief of Police Charles Press. I'm proud to say, both our organizations have long-standing relationships with Liberty City. In fact, Chief Press himself will join the young men on the trip as their chaperone.
Please help us send 10 deserving young men on this once-in-a-lifetime, transformational journey.
The Chief Press Foundation's mission is to create a new conversation between underserved neighborhoods and police officers to ensure greater trust and cooperation; it also strives to create communities that care. For more information, go to
