Tenzin Pulchong Memorial Library - Tso Pema (India)
Hello Dear Friends,
Lama Lena and the Louisiana Himalaya Association (LHA) are teaming up to support the Tenzin Pulchong Memorial Library located in Tso Pema (Lotus Lake), India. Donations are needed to help keep Tso Pema's only library open and maintained.
Background
The library was established by scholar Tenzin Pulchong. Living, studying and practicing meditation in the caves above Tso Pema since 1984, Tenzin Pulchong, a longtime friend and student of Lama Lena, spearheaded the opening of the library. He managed it as a volunteer since its opening in 2016 until his recent death in February 2024. Originally, Tenzin opened the library under the name Padmasambhava Public Library. To honor him, we are now changing the name to the Tenzin Pulchong Memorial Library.
Since its opening, the Library has received donations of books, furniture, and rental assistance from various sources including His Holiness the Dalai Lama, His Holiness the 17th Gyalwang Karmapa, Lama Lena, Louisiana Himalaya Association (LHA) and others. It now hosts two floors of books and study spaces. One entire floor consists of Buddhist texts. The other floor contains a large collection of national and international books including works by ancient Indian scholars, novels, gender studies, children’s books, exam preparation guides and much more.
Why is this library so important?
The library is a vital resource for both the local community as well as newly arrived young people who have relocated to Tso Pema from the remote regions. This next generation needs to have a library in which they can study, prepare for government jobs, take online courses, or become Buddhist scholars. On any given day, you will find dozens of students and visitors in the library. Currently, employs seven people—all of them volunteers. They maintain the library and offer programs to local school children.
Goal
Our hope is to find an an individual or business who would like to take on sponsorship of the library for the coming years. Until that time we are seeking support from friends and family and anyone who is willing and able to help out.
Only $5300 is needed to keep the library open and maintained for an entire year! Due August 1, 2024.
What does that pay for?
Annual rent due July 2024 - $3300.
Maintenance and utilities - $700
Resources for library staff - $1200 ($100 per month)
100% of your donation will go directly to the Library. The donations will be managed by Louisiana Himalaya Association. LHA is fully volunteer staffed and all volunteers cover their own expenses. This assures that donations all get to those in need.
Every donation, large or small, will be much appreciated. A dollar goes a long way in India!
Thank you for your generosity,
Laura Monteagudo
