Gabriel's Mitzvah Climbathon
After the killing of George Floyd, I realized how badly black people are treated. I would watch the protests late into the night, not wanting to miss a thing. Now that my Bar Mitzvah is coming up, I have decided to raise money for Black Lives Matter (BLM), whose mission is to” eradicate white supremacy and build local power to intervene in violence inflicted on Black communities by the state or vigilantes.”
To learn more about this issue, my mom and I decided to educate ourselves by reading a book called “Stamped” by Ibram X. Kendi and Jason Reynolds. It helped me understand how unfairly black people are treated and how significant a problem systemic racism is in this country. It also taught me how civil rights have advanced and fell back throughout history. This made me notice that we are currently in a period of “falling back” which is unacceptable.
As part of my Mitzvah project, I want to be a part of the change. I plan to use my love of rock climbing as a challenge to raise money for BLM. Here’s how I plan to do it-
Prior to the outbreak of Covid 19, my family and I planned to visit the Equal Justice Initiative’s Legacy Museum in Montgomery, Alabama. Unfortunately, we had to cancel the trip. But at the museum, there is a six-acre memorial for Peace and Justice. The memorial includes 800 six foot steel monuments, one for each county in the U.S. where a lynching took place. The names of the victims are engraved on each column.
In honor of those thousands of victims, I plan to climb the equivalent of 800 feet of wall. I hope you will help me in my efforts and donate anything you can, either on a per foot of climb basis or in any denomination you wish.
Thank you for helping me begin this project. If I don’t see you in person soon, hopefully you’ll see me on Zoom at my Bar Mitzvah on November 21st!
From, Gabriel
