Help Mikado & Jojo Breathe Easy Again

Mikado and JoJo have been through so much, and now we need your help to cover the cost of their medical care at Garden State Veterinary Specialists (GSVS).

Mikado’s Struggle to Breathe

Sweet Mikado started showing signs of labored breathing, struggling to get air comfortably. After a thorough examination, the vets at GSVS discovered overgrown tissue in the back of her throat, making it difficult for her to breathe properly. To help her, the vet used a balloon procedure to break up some of the tissue and prescribed steroids in hopes of reducing inflammation. We’re optimistic this will improve her quality of life, but the specialized care came at a steep cost.

JoJo’s Long Journey to Diagnosis

Poor JoJo saw three different veterinarians before finally getting the care he needed at GSVS. Despite multiple exams, no one could pinpoint what was wrong—until GSVS sedated and scoped him, revealing a polyp. Thankfully, they were able to remove it, but the journey to this diagnosis and procedure was long, stressful, and expensive.

Mikado and Jojo’s medical bills have skyrocketed, and as a small rescue, we rely entirely on donations to continue helping cats like them. Their specialized care, diagnostics, and procedures have left us with close to a thousand dollars in vet bills, and we can’t do this alone.

We’re reaching out on behalf of this kitty who urgently needs veterinary care. Recently, his/her feeder noticed that they were limping and favoring one paw. Upon closer inspection, it seems their paw may be broken or severely injured. The cat is in pain, and we need to get them the medical attention they deserve.

The first step is a thorough examination, but he/she is understandably scared and needs to be sedated to allow the vet to safely assess the injury and determine the best course of action. This might include X-rays, pain management, and potentially surgery or other treatments.

As a local rescue, we are doing everything we can to help assist. However, the costs of sedation, diagnostics, and any required treatment quickly add up.

On December 17, Ginger was adopted by a wonderful family in Somerset New Jersey. One of our volunteers drove down to their house to do his adoption and Ginger was settling in nicely. They had an amazing suite set up for him with a bedroom and a bathroom connecting, complete with lots of beds, scratch pads and litter box options. At the time of signing all the adoption paperwork, Ginger use the bathroom, but he went into the litter box and peed facing outward. We assumed that Ginger had just never been in an automatic litter box and since he is kind of a big cat, maybe he wasn’t sure exactly what to do yet.

The next morning, his adopters reported that he seemed to be frequently urinating very small doses, and they noticed some blood in his urine. Our foster has told us that in the time they had Ginger ,they did not notice any frequent urination or blood in urine, so we don't know where this came from. Ginger overall seemed to be in good spirits, playing eating, etc. however, the frequent urination persisted. Ginger’s adopters took him to the vet on December 19th where they did a multitude of tests to hopefully determine if this was simply a UTI or a bigger underlying issue.

They are waiting on the urinalysis to come back. He was given gabapentin for any possible pain he may be experiencing. His x-rays showed no stones and his bloodwork came back fine as well. The doctor says that if no infection or crystals show, he will start Ginger on antibiotics.

Although vet visits come with adopting an animal, we are embarrassed that a seemingly healthy cat went from totally fine in foster to peeing blood in just a short few hours after being adopted. We don't know if this is something major or a simple UTI, however, our new adopters are now out over $1,000 two days after bringing home their new pet. If you can find it in your heart to help them out this holiday season, we will be sending all of the money donated to them directly.

Cookie is fed by a dedicated elderly woman in Weehawken who dedicates every night to feeding her feral cat colonies. She noticed something was wrong with his lip a few weeks ago, and was finally able to trap him with the help of some volunteers. Cookie has an oral tumor that makes it difficult for him to eat. He surprised us all when he accepted pets, which broke our hearts- this friendly boy with a tumor should never have been on the streets.

Our network of volunteers took him to an animal hospital where a veterinarian has agreed to vaccinate him, as well as remove the tumor. We were quoted $550 for vaccinations, sedation and surgical removal of the tumor, with an additional $180 to send the tumor to a lab, to be tested for cancer. With $730 already quoted to us and looking forward to possible post-op expenses, we are hoping to raise $1000 to provide Cookie the relief and care he deserves.

Stash was playing and climbing on his favorite cat tower, but when he jumped off, he must have landed wrong and immediately began limping. We crated him for a few days, thinking he was improving, but then his foster noticed the limping persisted and his energy level was diminishing. He seemed to be in more pain than before, so we took him to Meadowlands Veterinary Hospital for x-rays. X-rays showed no broken bones, and the DVM concluded that there were no fractures reported at this time, likely indicating a soft tissue injury that needed more time to heal with medication. After almost ten days of crate rest, Stash had not improved and actually seemed worse again. On Saturday, 4/20, we made the call to take him to VEG. There, they repeated x-rays and again found no evidence of bony injury. However, it is unusual for soft tissue injuries to persist or worsen over this time period. The vet suspects some kind of myositis or cellulitis and cannot rule out foreign material causing an abscess, although he suspects this is less likely after evaluating the underlying tissue. If Stash does not improve, even after the course of steroids and antibiotics, the next steps would either involve advanced imaging such as a CT scan and potentially muscle biopsies or amputation of the limb. This poor kitten has been through so much in his short eight months of life. He already had an eye enucleation, and we do NOT want to amputate his leg unless absolutely necessary. Please help us cover his initial bills as we have NO idea what is to come for him in the near future.
