The Call to Save Lives
It all started with a woman—Rhonda Davis. Rhonda was a local resident of Akron, Ohio and an attorney who lived less than a mile from One of A Kind Pet Rescue. After moving to Marked Tree, Arkansas, she found herself actively saving animals who were being used in dogfighting rings—a very popular activity in this region of the country. Kittens and cats are used as bait and are often starved, poisoned and tortured. Dogs and puppies are being brutalized as well because their lives are not valued.  These are unthinkable acts, but a reality for these poor helpless souls. Even though our rescue operations were so far away, Rhonda hoped that it might be possible for One of A Kind Pet Rescue to step in and provide some relief for the pets.


Extending Our Mission
Since the beginning days of One of A Kind Pet Rescue, the mission of the organization has not strayed. Saving animal lives and rescuing pets in imminent danger of euthanasia, spaying/neutering and adoption of homeless animals into appropriate, loving homes has been at the core of One of A Kind. When Rhonda reached out and presented the hopelessness that these pets were experiencing, we couldn't resist the call to extend our mission beyond our Ohio borders.


Making it PAWsible
On our first trip, our rescue operations were able to save 63 kittens and cats, from Marked Tree, Arkansas. Our mission required us to travel almost 750 miles, spending more than 11 hours on the road. The fact that these pets are used in dogfighting rings as bait and tortured is unbearable and we were committed to going the distance and rescuing them. Once we brought them back to the safety of their new home in Akron, Ohio and saw those sweet faces settled in their cozy rooms at One of A Kind Pet Rescue, we knew we did the right thing by accepting this mission.

Ongoing Mission
The stories of how these pets are being tortured for entertainment in dogfighting rings were brought to One of A Kind Pet Rescue and we couldn't turn away. The dismembering of kittens for “training” purposes and the mutilation of sweet, innocent animals can’t be tolerated. Not only will we be saving just as many cats and kittens on our second trip this week, but we will take a second van to include puppies and dogs, as their treatment is no better. Our mission is to continue saving the lives of these pets beyond our borders and we hope you will support us. The authorities of Delbarton, WV have arrested someone for hoarding over 300 cats in a home that is now condemned. Unfortunately, 200 of those cats were deceased. The 100 living cats were removed and taken to various animal control facilities.


One of A Kind Pet Rescue has taken 19 of the cats, who were in critical need of medical treatment.  These nineteen cats have been living in filthy, unthinkable conditions. They are suffering from malnourishment and upper respiratory infections, severe enough to cause bleeding from their eyes and nose. Some have eye infections and ruptures, which will require surgery and removal. Since infections are prevalent with most of the kitties, a majority will require antibiotics and IV fluids, while others may need amputations. In addition, many of the females we've saved are pregnant and some are experiencing seizures. The team at One of A Kind Pet Rescue will make them whole again.


Keep in mind that these are not feral cats. They are loving kitties who are desperate for attention, healthy food, warm beds and loving arms. They need kind voices, sunbeams and restful sleep. They deserve treats, toys, beds and unconditional love.


It is our hope that they will be available for adoption within the next month. In the meantime, the medical supplies and costs necessary to get them healthy again and ready for adoption are extraordinary. One of A Kind will be working around the clock to nurse them back to health, ensuring that each kitty receives the proper care and attention. This is beyond our normal rescue operations that keep us near our capacity each and every day.

Saving the Diamonds in the Ruff
In early October, One of A Kind Pet Rescue staff and volunteers traveled to rural Ohio to rescue more than 50 dogs from a severe hoarding situation. 

A Good Samaritan in Southern Ohio started taking in stray dogs that had been “dropped off” at their residence. Before they knew it, they were in over their head without manpower or finances to care for the dogs. Then, true disaster struck when some of these dogs contracted sarcoptic mange and infected all the dogs in his care. Imagine the worst bug bite you’ve ever received: you itch it, you scratch it and soon you’ve got an open sore. Now, multiply this by about 200 and that is what these 45 dogs are experiencing. 

The good news is that sarcoptic mange is treatable. It takes expensive medicine, medicated baths, high-quality nutritional supplements and a lot of extra manpower hours to care and heal these beautiful little souls.

This sweet seven-year-old Lab mix was hit by a car. Ruby is having surgery to save her leg from the accident. She's from Southern Ohio and she's being treated at One of A Kind Pet Rescue because she has no other options. 

She needs surgery right away to place a bone plate on her tibia. She will also need a quiet foster home to rest and heal afterward. Please consider donating and your support will help with her surgery.
