Recovery On Water in honor of Conor Skelding
Hello Family & Friends!
It is with great excitement that I am running the Chicago Half Marathon on September 24th! Yes, you read that right. I, Abbey, am running a half marathon of 13.1 miles. If you know me, you know that running and I do not go hand in hand. However, I challenged myself to a new adventure and am determined to do so. Even better, I will be running it in honor of my dear family friend, Conor Skelding, who recently passed away.
My family grew up with the Skelding's. With 4 boys, all (almost) the same ages as me and my brothers, our families spent a lot of time together. Whether it was wiffle ball tournaments in the backyard, or weeks spent up at the lake, Conor was always a joy to be around. He never picked on us younger kids, like most older brothers do. He was always interested in what others were up to, asked everyone heartfelt questions, and never failed to make us laugh. Many boat rides with Conor, Lizzy (his wife), and Helen (their dog) now hold a special place in my heart. Conor sadly lost his battle with a rare and aggressive form of pancreatic cancer in April. Although we all miss him dearly, I am honored to be running in his memory next month.
I'm raising money to benefit Recovery On Water Inc. (ROW). ROW is a rowing team that gives survivors of breast cancer the unique opportunity to interact, become active in their recovery, and gain support from fellow survivors. Conor is being honored with the "Spirit of ROW" award at ROW's annual gala on September 29th. While in high school, Conor started rowing and his brothers, Cameron, Owen, and Aidan, soon followed in his footsteps (the Skelding boys always come to mind when I think of rowing). Conor was actually ROW's first volunteer in high school. Any donation will help not only make an impact for ROW, but also in showing that Conor is still helping people even up in Heaven.
Thank you for helping me raise money for such a great cause and in honor of a great person. Conor, this one's for you!
Love, Abbey
