Rocky Mountain Participation Nursery School

This fall, Rocky Mountain was able to return to our home at Peixotto Playground after being forced to vacate following a massive rockslide during the January 2023 storms, which damaged the grounds and made the site unsafe. We are so proud of our community - including parents, friends, family, alumni, and neighbors - for chipping in to make our homecoming possible. While we are thrilled to be back, ongoing investments of time and money are necessary to restore the Peixotto site.

With your help during Month of Giving, we’ll be able to reroot - quite literally! The rockslide and subsequent construction destroyed the grassy area, one of the swing sets, and garden boxes - all of which we are working to reestablish over the coming months. We are also making long overdue improvements to the Clubhouse, including new bookshelves, a new play kitchen, and a new stove in the real kitchen, which will not only bring the space back to life after sitting vacant for over a year and a half, but fortify it for generations to come.

This is the largest goal we’ve set to date, because as you may know, our school community was displaced from our home at Peixotto Playground following a massive rockslide during the January 2023 storms – a heartbreaking way to enter our 75th year. We are working with the City and hope to return by September 2024.

We’ve rallied together to keep the spirit of Rocky Mountain alive and well, but not without costs. We are running programming three days a week from Randall Museum and two days a week from Coronado Playground in the Mission. In addition to staff and families needing to contribute more hours, we pay rent to Randall Museum, allowing the kids to have natural outdoor space close to our stomping ground and to enjoy our beloved community garden.

Rocky Mountain Participation Nursery School was displaced from our home at Peixotto Playground following a massive rockslide during the January 2023 storms. The resilience and ingenuity of Rocky Mountain has been on full display ever since, providing programming from Randall Museum and Coronado Playground in the Mission. We are excited to announce that with your help, Rocky Mountain will return home this October!

This summer, with heavy machinery taking over Peixotto Playground, city workers installed a steel mesh barrier to prevent future damage from rock slides. For nearly two years, our beloved clubhouse sat empty, resulting in an accumulation of dirt and dust (made worse by construction), theft, and pest problems (mice - eek!).

Construction will be completed by the end of this month. We are calling on our community to rally together over the month of September to ensure we can resume programming at Peixotto Playground by October.

A safe and efficient return to the clubhouse involves a number of unplanned expenses, including professional carpet cleaning, additional staff time, replacing stolen tricycles, replanting the garden, and more! Thank you for considering a gift to the Peixotto Homecoming Campaign!
