Grace's Marathon Fundraiser for Rosie's Place
Hi all! I'm an un-athletic tortoise, and it's been 17 years since I ran my last marathon... Nonetheless, to celebrate my half-century mark this year, I decided to run my first Boston Marathon(!) -- and raise funds to support a longstanding local organization that supports women in need - Rosie's Place(!!). As a recent Boston transplant (as of 2019), I've met many individuals who have supported Rosie's Place in various ways. I'd love to help Rosie's Place continue to expand their services to even more women (http://rsp.convio.net/site/DocServer/Fact_Sheet_FY22.pdf).

Maggie Runs the Boston Marathon for Rosie's Place
Hello! On April 17th, 2023, I will be running the Boston Marathon in support of Rosie’s Place. Rosie’s Place, founded in 1974, was the first shelter for women in the country. Now, they support over 12,000 women each year. During high school, I volunteered with Rosie’s Place, preparing and serving meals. I saw first-hand the smiles, safety, and empowerment that Rosie’s Place provides for individuals and families. One thing I believe makes Rosie’s Place so unique is the holistic approach they take to homelessness. Not only do they provide basic and essential needs such as housing and food, but they also offer language classes, legal and employment resources, and many other tools.

I wholeheartedly believe that community and relationships are what allow people to thrive and maintain resilience. The humanity that Rosie’s Place underscores in their approach is one of the foremost reasons I am thrilled to run for this organization. In my own life, I have experienced the power of community in getting people through unimaginably difficult times; I cannot imagine a more compelling organization to support than one that fosters such community, particularly for a crucial demographic of people.

Growing up in Wellesley, MA, along the marathon route, I remember watching the runners come through every year. In 2013, my mom ran the Boston Marathon, and my family and I were near the finish line when the bombings occurred. We were very lucky to remain unharmed. The moments of that day stay with me, and as I train, I reflect on those who lost so much. It means the world to me to get to run this race ten years later and for an organization I believe in to my core.

I am overwhelmed with gratitude for this opportunity, and any amount you can give is deeply appreciated. Thank you so much for helping me reach my fundraising goal. I’m thrilled to be running the 127th Boston Marathon to raise money for Rosie’s Place and would greatly appreciate your help. Founded in 1974 as the first women’s shelter in the United States, Rosie’s Place continues to provide a safe and nurturing environment for poor and unhoused women in Boston.

I have been connected to Rosie’s Place for over a decade. Through my long-time experience volunteering as a Server in the kitchen, I have seen firsthand how Rosie’s Place has cultivated a unique culture that always puts its guests first, offering love and support to those in need without patronizing. Since moving away from Boston, I am thrilled to support Rosie’s Place in a new capacity as a fundraiser.

This will be my first time running a marathon and first time fundraising for an organization.

Raj Reddy is a OB/GYN resident physician at Massachusetts General Hospital and Brigham and Women's Hospital. He last ran the Boston Marathon in 2013 for MGH and is excited to run it 10 years later with Rosie's Place, an organization that he's seen benefit countless patients.

I'm going to run the Boston Marathon to help beat homelessness.

For those of you I haven't met, I was born and raised in Germany, went to school in England, and am currently living in New York, where I work as a communications consultant. I've spent the last few years between London and San Francisco, and am currently planning my wedding in Boston later this year. In my free time, I enjoy trying new recipes in the kitchen, discovering new books to read, and exploring my surroundings with new running or cycling routes.

The Boston Marathon on 18th April 2022 will be my first marathon in the US, and I couldn't be happier to be running it for a cause that means a lot to dear ones around me, in a city that already means a lot to me.

The acute and harsh reality of homelessness is present everywhere and certainly everywhere I've lived - whether in London, San Francisco or New York - but seeing people struggle in freezing East Coast temperatures is particularly heartbreaking. Holistic approaches show a path to end homelessness - and Rosie's Place is a prime example.

Rosie's Place is dedicated to providing a safe and nurturing environment to help poor and homeless women maintain their dignity, seek opportunity and find security in their lives. In 2017 I had the honor of serving at Rosie’s Place for my AmeriCorps Legal Advocates of Massachusetts service year. Although my service year ended in 2018, I have continued to serve Rosie’s Place through volunteering, donating, and their Young Professionals Network. I am excited to take these next gigantic strides in serving Rosie’s Place and their guests.

During my service year, I witnessed the remarkable work Rosie’s Place does on daily basis, from providing a morning cup of coffee to legal representation on complex legal cases. Also, I learned the history of Rosie’s Place as the nation’s first women’s shelter and how it has grown into a multiservice sanctuary for all women. Their radical compassion and mission are truly profound.

Additionally, homelessness is growing in Greater Boston at a rate that outpaces the rest of the nation.
