2022 Appeal to Support NSBP-HGS MENTORING PROGRAM
Please join us in supporting the Dream and Inspire: Mentoring Future Leaders Program, to provide pathways to success for young people in NYC!
The Goal: To engage youth to pursue higher education and career pathways in the Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) fields, as well as aid in the development of social-emotional skills and build self confidence.
How We Do It: The Dream and Inspire: Mentoring Future Leaders Program pairs collegiate members of the National Society of Black Physicists (NSBP), and schools across the nation, with middle or high school-aged participants who share similar sociocultural backgrounds and interests. The program aims to increase awareness of STEM careers, while promoting feelings of community and belonging. The result is the empowerment of mentors and mentees alike, as well as both academic and professional development. Current middle school students will be joining the workforce in 10 years; therefore, it is crucial to support and advocate for the minds of the future while they are still developing.
This program combines four primary modes of engagement to help youth grow and prosper. Weekly Curated Conversations with mentors allow youth to create a bond with successful people they can identify with, and get academic help while also being encouraged to discuss and pursue their goals and aspirations. Cohort Events bring the entire group of mentees, mentors, and mentor leaders together for exclusive seminars, delivered by distinguished professionals. Cohort Events blend STEM disciplines with everyday life and the sociocultural backgrounds of participants. Mentees are also given the opportunity to choose STEAM Kits; or tools to facilitate hands-on projects, which they can work on with their mentor. Mindfulness Training is also emphasized throughout the program, as being present and tuned-in are key elements of success and mental well-being.
This program is a collaborative community effort, and we would deeply appreciate your donations towards the success of NYC's future. Continuing to provide educational resources and social-emotional support for young people in these communities will enable them to reach the collegiate level and build careers in STEM, ultimately creating academic, scientific, and tech sectors that reflect the diversity of New York!
Who Are We? Science and Arts Engagement New York (SAENY), a not-for-profit 501©3 corporation, partnered with The City College of New York (CCNY), to create the Harlem Gallery of Science (HGS). HGS addresses income inequality by creating new and innovative approaches to prepare youth from marginalized communities for careers in high-paying jobs in the tech sector of NYC.
The National Society of Black Physicists (NSBP) develops and supports efforts to increase opportunities for African Americans in physics and to increase their numbers as well as the visibility of their scientific work. HGS and NSBP have united to build the Dream and Inspire: Mentoring Future Leaders Program.
