WALK A MILE: Mile 11 - Morocco
In a small village outside of Marrakesh, Morocco, I met a group of nine Moroccan women who make carpets. As rural women, they don’t have many opportunities to work, gain independence, or have a purpose outside of the home. One woman, Samira, opened up to me about the struggles of Moroccan women and a transformational nonprofit workshop that gave them hope for a new future. Through empowerment trainings and ongoing support, they have created a coop that brings joy, hope, and purpose to their lives!

QUICK FACTS:

Carpet weaving is a traditional craft in Morocco. Generations of women pass down the skill and knowledge to keep the heritage alive.

Traditionally, rural women in Morocco do not work, have their own money, or any purpose outside of the home.

High Atlas Foundation runs immersive empowerment workshops, provides ongoing training and support, and creates sustainable development in rural communities.

After attending an empowerment workshop, Samira and 8 women in her community founded a carpet-making cooperative and are thriving!

One carpet costs $20-$100 depending on complexity and time to make it. The women sell the carpets to visitors of their village.

100% of donations will directly support High Atlas Foundation. High Atlas Foundation is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit dedicated to equipping Moroccan communities to become self-sustaining while preserving and celebrating aspects of cultural heritage across generations.

Restore Hope: Morocco Quake Relief

On September 8, 2023, an earthquake struck Morocco. With an epicenter located in the rural commune of Ighil, Al Haouz province, Marrakech-Safi region, the earthquake left more than 2,900 dead and 5,500 injured in the provinces of Al Haouz, Taroudant, Azilal, Ouarzazate and Chichaoua. The tremors caused significant damage to homes and key infrastructure, collapsing wells, destroying agricultural terraces, making roads inaccessible, and leaving, in some cases, entire villages leveled and without access to water, food, or medical care.

As a decades-long partner of communities in the High Atlas, the High Atlas Foundation is uniquely positioned to provide relief as they join communities in the transition to long-term reconstruction.

Your contribution to this fundraiser will make a significant impact and help rebuild homes, restore hope, and give strength to those affected. Together, we can show solidarity and compassion and help foster trust in humanity. The funds collected will be deposited directly into the High Atlas Foundation's account. The Foundation has been doing an excellent job working with local communities, and their experience spans over 20 years in the field. They were among the first responders when the earthquake hit. Our hearts grieve for the people of Morocco after Friday night's earthquake that has caused widespread devastation and loss of life. We sought to find a reputable Moroccan organization to contribute to that is already making a difference in communities in dire need of support. Earthquake Relief for Moroccan Communities
Last Friday night, a terrible earthquake struck Morocco leaving 2,900 dead and over 5,500 injured. Structural damage to homes, shops, roads, government and hospital buildings were catastrophic. Many Moroccans are now left without proper shelter, clean water or food.

Given my family's heritage, I want to find a way to help. Through the High Atlas Foundation, I am raising money to spread relief and aid for those affected by the earthquake. The High Atlas foundation is a nonprofit organization dedicated to sustainable development and natural disaster aid.

Any donation you make will have an impact on those in need.

Want to join Destination Impact in making a difference? This year, we are going to build a well in Zagora, a rural community in the Atlas mountains to provide clean drinking water for the children at our partner school, and surrounding families.

More information about High Atlas Foundation (Haf): The High Atlas Foundation (HAF) works to establish development projects in different parts of Morocco that local communities design and manage, and that are in partnership with government and non-government agencies. HAF uses a participatory development approach that includes beneficiaries as active partners in every step of the development process - from prioritizing development goals to project implementation and management to monitoring and evaluation. Key to this approach is the facilitation of community planning meetings where beneficiaries together determine the types of projects they want to undertake and create action plans.
