United Way of Asheville and Buncombe County

On September 27th, 2024 Hurricane Helene hit a six-state region with Asheville and Western North Carolina being among the hardest hit areas leaving this community without water for 53 days, power for two weeks, and over 106 community members tragically taken, 43 of those from Buncombe County.

In two quick days the hurricane:

For days there was no way in or out with water devastating major highways and mudslides covering roads. Buncombe County lost 40 percent of their tree canopy, roads eroded, and thousands of homes and businesses gone or damaged. Many residents had no cell service and relied on radios to receive daily updates on what was going on.

Six months later, there is still a daunting road ahead for this vibrant community, but they are beginning to see progress. Every day news of a bridge, road, or business opening back up brings a cheer to the community. Yet many folks are still in need of basic supplies, shelter, jobs and tourism for their hurting businesses.

As a social impact driven marketing agency, we at Momentum, have organized an Asheville Giveback Influencer trip the weekend of March 15th to help amplify the amazing community Asheville is and the deep need for tourism and financial support to help continue the rebuild.

We have partnered with United Way of Asheville and Buncombe County as our local nonprofit partner to help raise money for them to continue the heroic rebuild work. This group has already invested a first wave of funding, almost $3M, to support both direct assistance to individuals and to smaller nonprofit organizations that are working closest to vulnerable communities. They’ve mobilized hundreds of volunteers and are working with community groups to plan the long-term recovery of impacted families.

November is usually Men's Health Month, and urology departments around the world celebrate by raising money through Movember to raise money and awareness for a number of causes.

This year, the Wake Forest Urology Residency Program decided to work a little bit closer to home and raise money for our beloved communities in Western North Carolina.

We will be starting clean-shaven and growing the gnarliest and silliest mustaches we can to start conversations and raise awareness of the need to help our neighbors and communities devastated by Hurricane Helene.

United Way of Asheville and Buncombe County is the dedicated North Carolina Disaster Relief Fund, designated by the State of North Carolina. All proceeds will provide immediate unmet needs for disaster survivors and fulfill long term unmet needs in the area.

My name is Alec Lloyd, a lifetime NC native and lover of the Old North State.

As you’ve probably seen, the recent damages of Hurricane Helene have completely devastated the beautiful towns, thriving communities, and infrastructure of the western part of NC. While this is normally a place of serene beauty and peace, people’s lives have been completely turned upside down by this terrible natural disaster, and it’s our turn to help out those who’ve been affected.

On November 16th, I’ll run the Charlotte Half-Marathon in honor of those impacted by Helene, and with the help of you all, raise as much money as possible for the United Way of Asheville and Buncombe County with every mile. The United Way of Asheville and Buncombe County has fully shifted their focus to Hurricane relief during this hard time and is keen on rebuilding these areas. Let’s get our neighbors back on their feet.

My name is Andrew, and I’m a current student at Emory University in Atlanta, Georgia. But a while ago, I was a new resident of Asheville, North Carolina. For those that haven’t had the pleasure of traveling to this town, words don’t do it justice. Its mountains, its people, and the community that make it up are something to behold. Asheville and its impact on my own life cannot be understated. Which is why when I found out about the destruction Hurricane Helene brought to this town, I was devastated. The humanitarian crisis is unlike anything this town has ever seen. Asheville needs your help.

As a student-athlete at Emory, I likely wouldn’t be in the position I’m in without the love and support from those within the Asheville community. So for the next 10 days, I will be donating a dollar for every mile run. If we can hit our $500 dollar goal, I will double this donation.
