This poor guy is Rojo, now named Falcon, a 2-year-old cattle dog.
He was hit by a car on Sunday night around 7:30 in front of his own house in Waukegan. His neighbor called the Waukegan Police who immediately picked him up and took him to Premier Emergency center where he was stabilized, put on pain medication, and kept there overnight. They found his owner who promptly rejected him and signed him over to animal control because they didn’t want a “broken dog.” The next morning, Waukegan Animal Control took Falcon to a regular vet where X-rays were done and he was found to have a broken hip bone. Sometimes the pelvis can be repaired, but more often it has to heal on his own. Because of the delicate nature of a break like this and being hit by a car, Falcon was sent to a foster home where he ended up having a seizure overnight and then another one not long after. He was rushed to another veterinarian where he was treated for the seizures and his XRAY was reviewed again; he could possibly have nerve damage and may need a plate for him to heal properly. When a dog is hit by a car, the effects aren’t always immediate. They can have complications like nerve damage, blood clots, shock, internal bleeding, that aren’t immediately apparent. His seizures could be from hitting his head, or they could be the result of an underlying genetic condition, but only time and more diagnostics will tell us that. Additionally, Falcon may need further assessments with an orthopedic surgeon and much more supportive care like bloodwork, fluids and continued close monitoring. We won’t know about his future without these important diagnostics. Falcon’s poor leg is very swollen and painful, but even through all that pain, he is one of the sweetest dogs they have ever taken care of. His eyes light up when the children walk in the room and, despite his pain and brokenness, he is an absolute lover.
Waukegan Animals Getting Saved needs your help in getting Falcon the important care he needs so he can heal, rest, and recuperate.
