Do you want to be a Valentine for the Maui Community? Support The Sewing Hui’s latest sewing initiative!

The Sewing Hui has been busy making thousands of masks in 2020. We are starting off 2021 with a new sewing initiative: creating fleece blankets and fleece beanies for Maui’s elders. The Sewing Hui is currently raising funds to cover the supplies needed to create 300 fleece blankets and beanies for Hale Makua. We need your help to make this project possible!

The Sewing Hui evolved out of the Maui Face Mask Project . That project, conducted in the Spring of 2020, was started to address the critical shortage of N-95 face masks on Maui. The project created 10,000 high quality filter face masks for Maui’s healthcare providers.  These face masks were modeled after a flat-fold N-95 face mask provided by Kaiser Permanente Maui Lani Clinic.

After the project was completed on May 15, 2020, the volunteers wanted to continue sewing for the community. The Sewing Hui volunteers are a dedicated team who create and sew a variety of projects for Maui. We create sewing initiatives to benefit the Maui community, spanning healthcare providers, schools, and community and performing arts organizations. Founded and directed by dressmaker Jennifer Oberg, The Sewing Hui is a registered Hawaii non-profit corporation, fiscally-sponsored by Maui Makers, a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization. The Sewing Hui’s mission is to help our community by donating hand-sewn items to organizations in need across Maui. We are asking for donations to help cover the cost of supplies for the 300 fleece blankets and beanies to be donated to Hale Makua. The team of volunteers at The Sewing Hui will then be able to sew up all of these items and donate them to Hale Makua’s residents.

The Sewing Hui is in the process of becoming a 501(c)3 non-profit through the IRS.  Until that is finalized, the Maui Makers, a current 501(c)3, is acting as the fiscal sponsor for The Sewing Hui.  Donations and grants for The Sewing Hui can go through the Maui Makers if donors wish their funds to go through a 501(c)3 organization.  The Maui Makers will designate the funding to go to The Sewing Hui project.

It is our goal to help the Maui community to the extent that we can. Thank you for your help and for being a Valentine for the community. Mahalo Nui!
