Support Afghan Musicians in Portugal

It has been one year since the devastating takeover of Afghanistan by the Taliban. They have deprived Afghans of fundamental human rights, including banning women and girls from secondary and higher education, restricting women’s movement, and targeting and jailing individuals who worked with western countries.

Along with a growing humanitarian crisis, Afghanistan's rich musical culture has also been under attack as the Taliban have banned all music and targeted musicians throughout Afghanistan. In September of last year, soon after their takeover, the Afghan folk singer Fawad Andarabi was dragged from his home and killed by the Taliban in a province north of Kabul*.

Since August 2021, Portugal has accepted a significant number of Afghans as refugees; among them were over 200 students and staff of Afghanistan’s National Institute of Music (ANIM).

While grateful for escaping the Taliban and being accepted as refugees, they have been dispersed among several cities in Portugal. Many of them are now struggling to adjust to their new lives. As they navigate the difficulties of being refugees in a foreign country, they hope to keep the Afghan music and culture alive.

Afghanistan is the only country in the world where music is banned. This crowdfunding effort is developed to support a group of Afghan musicians to keep the Afghan culture and music alive. The money will be used to purchase traditional Afghan instruments which are expensive and difficult to find in Portugal, produce music in a professional studio, book gigs, and fund any other ideas proposed by the Afghan musicians themselves.

Who we are

We are a group of friends who came to learn about the difficult situations of these Afghan musicians in Lisbon. We have met with them to find ways to support them in a meaningful way. We are in the process of establishing our own association. Current funds raised will go to Global Shapers and be administered through them.

Note: this fundraising event is raising money for individual Afghan musicians and not for ANIM as an institution.

While supporting their passion for music is important, we acknowledge that there are a vast number of other challenges they face in Portugal. If you would like to sponsor one person and support them with housing, job, etc., for a few months, please reach out to us separately.

Passou um ano desde a devastadora tomada de poder dos Talibãs no Afeganistão. A população afegã vive privada de direitos humanos fundamentais - as mulheres perderam o acesso à educação secundária e superior e a sua mobilidade é vigiada e restringida. Cidadãos que trabalhem com países ocidentais são perseguidos e presos.

Instalou-se uma crescente crise humanitária que ameaça qualquer manifestação cultural. O regime Talibã baniu todos os géneros de música e persegue músicos por todo o país. Em Setembro de 2021, pouco tempo depois da tomada de poder, o cantor Fawad Andarabi foi levado de sua casa e assassinado numa província a norte de Cabul*.

Desde Agosto do ano passado, Portugal recebeu um número significativo de afegãos com estatuto de refugiados, entre eles, mais de 200 alunos e professores da Afghanistan’s National Institute of Music (ANIM). Alojados em localidades dispersas pelo país, muitos encontram severas dificuldades de integração no novo contexto. Enquanto buscam restabelecer as suas vidas refugiados num país estrangeiro, desejam manter viva a sua música como expressão privilegiada da enorme riqueza cultural do seu país de origem.

O movimento que surgiu e deu origem a este crowdfunding foi criado com o objectivo de apoiar um grupo de músicos na reconstrução das suas carreiras. O valor angariado será usado para a compra de instrumentos musicais, produção e gravação em estúdio, agendamento de concertos e financiamento de projectos concebidos pelos próprios músicos.

Quem somos

Somos um grupo de amigas que trabalham em diversas áreas e decidiram unir esforços com o objectivo comum de apoiar um grupo de músicos afegãos a viver em Lisboa. Depois de vários encontros e diálogos decidimos apoiar uma das vertentes na qual enfrentam maiores dificuldades: a continuidade da sua formação e exercício profissional. O valor angariado será administrado através da Global Shapers.
