On Saturday, September 26 we lost our dad and husband to my mom, Judy. Our dad was battling Progressive MS for the last 5 years. He was also dealing with diabetes and heart disease for even longer than the MS. At the end of this last summer, his diabetes was causing issues with his lower extremities, which ended in an infection in his right foot. My mom brought him into the hospital where they decided he needed to have two toes removed. This is where things began to go downhill. Not only had the infection turned into MRSA, the doctors figured he would need a valve replaced in his heart. After a few days, the infection wasn’t contained by the toes being removed, it was decided that now the entire right foot would be amputated. Once they took his foot, my dad’s body was showing its weakness and needed to be on a ventilator. During this time his kidneys began shutting down. After almost 14 days of keeping him alive with the ventilator, dialysis machine, and lots of medicine, the doctors had the discussion with us about removing the ventilator and what could possibly happen following the removal. We all knew the possible consequences we could be facing. They removed the ventilator and my dad surprised everyone! He was breathing on his own! My mom walked into his room the next morning to hear him say, “How are you?” Over the next 10 days, they removed the rest of his lower right leg and he continued to breathe on his own. His body was weak, his heart was weak, his kidneys were still not functioning, but he still wasn’t going to let my mom leave each night without “Love you,” and “Take me with you.”  He had been in two different hospitals for over 30 days with the majority of it sedated and on a ventilator. He had three major surgeries and was hooked to a dialysis machine. On Saturday, the 26th of September, his heart was tired and just couldn’t take the exhaustion anymore. He went to be with his own mom, Grandma “Licious.” We want our dad back, we want him to listen to Joe Cocker or The Rascals. We want to see him cook or make some chili! We want to watch TV with him. We’d give anything to hear him laugh or roar with his grandkids who he loved so much! But, we also know his pain has been relieved and we are happy he isn’t suffering anymore.

In the end, our dad received top notch care while in the ICU hospital recovering from three big surgeries. Unfortunately, care like this is SO EXPENSIVE! Medicare will cover some of the medical bills but not all. The cremation bill itself is more than my mom and a family of teachers can bear. So, in lieu of flowers or gifts, we are asking for help by making any monetary donations towards my dad’s cremation so he can rest in peace. 100% of all donations will go toward my dad’s cremation and if there are any extra dollars they will go toward medical bills.

From the bottom of our hearts, we thank you for helping my mom and dad!
