Who is Room to Read?
Room to Read is a non-profit organization that seeks to transform the lives of millions of children in developing countries by focusing on literacy and gender equality in education. Working in collaboration with local communities, partner organizations, and governments, Room to Read works to develop literacy skills and reading habits among primary school children, and supports girls in their efforts to complete secondary school with the relevant life skills to succeed in school and beyond.
Room to Read has been implementing the Girls' Education Program since 2001. The Girls' Education Program was founded with the belief that educated women can change the world. By empowering secondary school-aged girls with formal education and the complementary life skills essential for success, Room to Read works to ensure that girls are prepared for their transitions to young adulthood. Whether these young women go on to start families, begin a career, attend college, or all three, they will be able to make educated decisions about their futures.
With the help of friends like you, we have supported more than 95,000 program participants across Bangladesh, Cambodia, India, Laos, Nepal, Sri Lanka, Tanzania and Vietnam.
In this collaboration with CSWC, Room to Read will provide technical support to enhance CSWC’s work so they can improve their life skills training approaches and mentoring methods. Room to Read will also review CSWC’s existing materials on child rights, sexual harassment, and violence prevention, and will help to enhance their program design and delivery by providing additional training to all of their trainers.
Who is CSWC?
Capacity Building Support and Center for Women and Children (CSWC) is a grassroots organization with a mission to empower vulnerable migrant girls. CSWC works on community education, community consultation and capacity building for women and children on life skills, sexual education, reproductive health, violence against women, child abuse issues and career orientation.
CSWC has provided services such as training, workshops, project consultation, and project management to tens of thousands of street kids, poor migrant children, child victims of sexual violence and abuse, children with HIV-AIDs, and those at risk of juvenile delinquency in many provinces of Vietnam (including Can Tho, Vinh Long, Dong Thap, Da Nang, Binh Duong, Ho Chi Minh City and Dong Nai).
Issues we face:
Ho Chi Minh City has 13 million people that have migrated from other provinces. Many families move there with limited support. One in ten children are forced to work as child laborers with little or no access to education. These same children are also more prone to increasing hazards such as sexual abuse, violence, child labor exploitation, poor health, and drug use. It is reported that 12,000 children in Ho Chi Minh City are living in one or more of these highly difficult circumstances.
These circumstances pose as obstacles for young girls as they work to complete their education. Room to Read strives to intervene when they are especially vulnerable to falling behind or dropping out of secondary school. With a focus on teaching girls important life skills and providing mentoring opportunities, Room to Read ensures that girls are prepared to overcome these obstacles and succeed in their education, as well as their lives after graduation.
About the Project:
This pilot project will span over 12 months. The goal of this project is to protect and promote the rights of vulnerable girls in shelters and informal education establishments in Ho Chi Minh City (HCMC), specifically District 8 and Binh Chanh District, through education and social service support. The project includes the following activities:
• Providing 150 vulnerable children with essential education and material support. This will allow them to access and pursue schooling in informal education establishments. Life skills classes will also be provided, addressing children's and young girls' rights, as well as sexual harassment and abuse prevention so that they acquire the necessary awareness and skills to protect themselves.
• Educating and enhancing the capacity of parents and caregivers through a training workshop to provide educational and social support to vulnerable children, with targeted attention to girls. The workshop will help to enhance their knowledge, change their attitudes, and enable them to provide more effective support to their children.
• Building the capacity of relevant stakeholders such as local government and social service providers to protect and promote the rights of vulnerable children, with targeted attention to girls. CSWC staff will conduct regular monitoring support to the participating child protection centers and shelters, evaluate implementation and document the pilot’s lessons learned.
The Budget:
• $7,250: Providing education and material support for 150 vulnerable children (Includes student books, school supplies, and life skills classes focused on girls' rights and sexual harassment prevention)
• $2,700: Parent and caregiver education (Parents' workshop on girls' rights to help change attitudes towards girls, training sessions for caregivers, and CSWC field staff on topics of girl child rights and harassment prevention)
• $1,800: Material Development and capacity building for CSWC (Reviewing and revising existing materials on girls' rights, sexual harassment and gender-based violence, as well as providing training for trainers)
• $3,000: Partnerships and project stakeholder engagement (Includes workshops, quarterly meetings, and a year-end review with all stakeholders)
• $5,400: Ongoing monitoring and support of the project
• $1,800: CSWC Management Fees
• $2,680: Room to Read staff costs (includes project management, workshop development and participation, meeting time, review of materials, transportation, etc)
