Brian & Sam Gillette Rebuild after Mold Toxicity
Donation protected
Meet Brian & Sam Gillette: a young, vibrant couple who have had the devastating loss living with toxic mold.
In November of 2021, they moved into a new apartment. Within days, Sam developed a rash across her face and neck. It took four months of investigation to figure out that this painful rash (which was only getting worse) was caused by toxic mold in the apartment. As you can see below, Sam experienced a great deal of pain and intense symptoms.
In May 2022, after months of pain and no relief, they moved in with a family so their bodies could experience safety and they could begin to determine their next steps. Their bodies took weeks to find true rest, and in that time, they were able to get out of their lease and find a new apartment to move into. That was just the beginning.
Mold isn't just dangerous; it's pervasive. In order to fully heal from it, you have to get rid of everything porous (books, artwork, clothing, etc.) and anything that has been contaminated. Sam & Brian had to throw away all their furniture - beds, sofa (multiple) headboards, tables, storage containers, dressers, desks, nightstands, etc. as well as most of their keepsakes, including Sam's wedding dress, book collections, family bibles, etc. You can begin to picture the profound loss they experienced as their life's belongings and keepsakes disappeared quickly and traumatically.
But again, that was and is just the beginning. Sam and Brian had to spend thousands of dollars cleaning the few items they could keep. They had to continue the cleaning process when they moved by fogging their new apartment with an expensive fogger, just in case any mold spores followed them. This took weeks of tedious work. It was physically and emotionally draining.
Brian is a small business owner and has had to turn down work opportunities out of sheer exhaustion. Combined with the financial burden of cleaning and replacing all of their belongings, they had to spend their entire savings just to survive.
They still cannot stay in their new apartment due to contamination and feel a complete loss of home. They have been living with the family that has taken them in for the past six months, and while they are very grateful, they also are desperate to have a home again.
As for their health, they have spent $8,000 thus far on medical expenses just for Sam's treatment and she is not yet at the end of the road. Brian has not been able to begin treatment due to financial constraints. Still, he has experienced intense physical symptoms (insomnia, headaches, brain fog, nausea, vertigo, restlessness, burning in the lungs, coughing, sinus pain, severe joint pain, etc.) By supporting them with this GoFundMe campaign, you are helping Brian begin his healing journey.
Please consider supporting Brian & Sam through this very challenging season on top of what has already been a tumultuous year. All of your donations will go directly to Brian & Sam's medical expenses, detox treatments, and helping them rebuild their home.
The healing journey still ahead - physical, emotional, and financial - will take tremendous perseverance and strength. Please consider supporting this couple with your love and financial gifts.
