Build your local bookstore: Canvasback Books

Friends of the Bookstore, 

Canvasback Books is a new, independent bookstore in downtown Klamath Falls, Oregon.  It was created as a pop-up shop at the farmer's market last year, to bring our community together around a love of sharing books and ideas. 

The new home of Canvasback Books will be in the historic downtown, in what was the Lake Hotel, built in 1906. Renovating this space has been an enormous undertaking. The building required all new electricity, heat, plumbing, interior walls, floors, ceiling, a bathroom, a new roof and a new structurally sound steel-reinforced facade. Restoring this beautiful building has been a huge labor of love, costing us $140,000 to date.

We've watched our community come together to help, too. Nearly a hundred family members, friends and neighbors have contributed volunteer time, energy, and expertise to help with this renovation. With the building nearing completion, we're getting ready for the next phase: opening the bookstore!

We are asking for your help now to work together to provide an additional $40,000 to fill this beautiful space with the things that will make it a great bookstore. We will use all funds to buy:

- Books!!!
- Materials to build bookshelves
- Games, toys, stationery, cards
- Tables, chairs and other furniture
- Point of sale system, inventory software

The dream of Canvasback Books is that it will serve as a gathering space for our community, a home for diverse voices, and a safe place for children and young adults to grow in their appreciation of books and ideas.  In what can feel like a time of division and acrimony, I believe this is more important than it has ever been.
