The Callicoon Theater is more than just a movie theater.
With our warm and friendly staff, diverse programming of all kinds, and our mighty little heart, The Callicoon Theater provides meaningful connection within our community.
Since 1948, The Callicoon Theater has stood the test of time and survived many obstacles. The invention of television, multiplexes, VCRs, digital projection, and at-home streaming platforms have all presented their own challenges which this small-town movie theater has overcome. We have been continuously open and operating for 72 years. No small feat for a single-screen movie theater in the U.S. It is, in fact, heroic.
But now we are faced with a perilous situation: being closed to the public for months, due to the Covid-19 virus. This is the first challenge we can't overcome in any of our usual ways, because the one thing we do best: giving our community a place to gather and support each other, is the very thing which is most dangerous to everyone's health and safety.
The Callicoon Theater needs financial support in order to weather this storm. We hope to have money coming in through an SBA loan, but without any indication of when we can re-open we are grasping at an unreal timeline. We have no way of knowing how much is going to be enough to keep us afloat, but we do know that the film studios are pulling back virtually all of the summer blockbusters, meaning that even when we do re-open we cannot rely on strong summer movies to rebuild our reserves.
Funds raised through this campaign will go directly toward operating costs like utilities, insurance, taxes, payroll assistance to our staff, and making sure we have enough funds to re-open our doors when it is finally safe to do so. Any funds remaining when we re-open will be put toward restoring the theater and creating an outdoor movie screen for the summer months in Callicoon.
These funds will support The Callicoon Theater in both the immediate and (we hope) long term future. Please help with any amount you can give. If inclined, please pass this GoFundMe page on to others. Together, we can slay this dragon.
Thank you so much for your support. Thank you for welcoming me to Callicoon and for all that you do to keep the theater alive and thriving.
Like Callicoon itself, The Callicoon Theater is not a product, it is a process. This difficult moment will provide each of us with new growth, change, and bright spots which will resonate in our community for years to come.
Thank you so much,
xKrissy
