Dear friends,

The corona virus has affected us all.  It has changed the way we travel, the way we work and the way we socialise. It has forever changed the way we live.

As difficult as these changes will be for us, for many others the consequences will be far worse.  Even the most optimistic estimates are that this pandemic will claim the lives of tens of thousands of people in the coming weeks.

For my family, one of the most dispiriting aspects of this, is that the people most at risk of serious sickness or even death, include the older members of our society.

These include all of the grandparents and great-grand parents in our community.
- our Nanna and Grandad,
- your Grandma and Poppy,
- the lady who has lived in your neighbourhood ever since you can remember.

We all know that washing our hands frequently, using social distancing, and wearing masks in high-risk environments, are some of the most effective preventative measures that we can do to reduce the risk of infection.  And these measures are even more important for the vulnerable members of our community!

But with shops often selling out of soap and sanitizers, and with the supermarkets frequently being very crowded places, even this seemingly simple advice is often extremely difficult to follow.

In such scenarios, young millenials might simply jump on the internet and buy these products online. But such technological options are not always so easy or viable for older people. And even for those who are able, many of the online stores across the country are now frequently out of stock of these critical products.

Also, despite many health professions now offering tele-health options, it is inevitable that the elderly will still need to physically leave the house for the occasional essential appointment. These activities might involve waiting in long queues, or being in environments with many potentially high-risk people for sustained periods.  It is critical in such situations, to offer these people appropriate personal protective gear such as face masks, in order to minimise infection in these high-risk environments.  Currently, it is almost impossible to buy face masks locally.

So our family has embarked on a initiative to make Corona Care Packs for the elderly in our community. These packs will include critical hygiene products such as soap, sanitizers and masks. And they will be delivered for free, right to their doorsteps.

#CoronaCarePack

Last year, our parents ("Nanna and Grandad" to the kids) celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary. Help us to help more elderly couples live to see their 50th.

As we began developing a pack for our own parents (and grandparents), we realised that although each person might only require a few masks,  buying them from interstate or overseas often required ordering products in bulk packs of 10 or 20 or sometimes even 100 at a time!

This got us thinking that we could buy these bulk packs, and then separate the contents in order to make lots of individual Corona Care Packs that could serve not just our own parents and grandparents, but those of hundreds of other families in our city.  And maybe even around all our state.

Now that some of the products that we ordered have already arrived, we have the confirmation that some supply chains are still currently working.  We have personally committed a substantial amount to get this project underway, but we would now desparetely like to make and distribute many more Corona Care Packs to people in our community.

The "flatten the curve" health campaign is built upon the hope that everyone has plentiful access to soap, sanitizers and, where necessary, masks.  Therefore, the faster we can ensure that the elderly have access to personal hygiene supplies, the safer it is for all of us.

Every. Person. Counts.

Based on consultation with health professionals, including a Director of ICU,  the initial #CoronaCarePack will include a generous supply of soap, sanitizer, and a few face masks for essential trips.

The current purchase cost for this is $12.

So for less than $50 you could fund four (4) Corona Care Packs which we will distribute for free to the at-risk and elderly in our community.

(The precise contents and cost may change as there is currently high volatility around the world in the price and availability of these products. In all cases, we will try to find the best value-for-money products that assist in reducing the risk of the Corona virus being transmitted).

Every. Dollar. Counts.

The speed at which the corona virus is spreading is almost beyond belief. In almost all populated countries, deaths are doubling every 3-7 days. And the majority of these are elderly.

Today we all have a chance to slow down the spread, and reduce the burden on our health systems. And ultimately, this is an opportunity for all of us to play our part, however small, in saving people's lives.

This is a time and privilege for all of us to give generously.

This campaign will be completely not-for-profit. Every cent of every dollar donated will go into the purchase and distribution of the Corona Care Packs.

The campagin will predominantly focus  on offering a #CoronaCarePack to those who are living independently, rather than those in residential aged care homes or hospitals.

To systematically identify which at-risk elderly in the community will receive the Packs, we shall select several established reputable local community organizations. Currently, it is expected these institutions will be: City Mission, Red Cross, Rotary, Lyons and the local Baha'i community.  For each local branch of these agencies, we will ask them to identify a list of relevant at-risk elderly recipients. We will then give the agency sufficient packs in order for them to then distribute the packs to these receipeints using the own network and infrastructure.

Every #CoronaCarePack counts.

So please, help us to help the grandparents!

Sincerely thanking all of you in advance,
