Downtown Norfolk Community Garden Water Install
Donation protected
****Update****
We recently failed our City of Norfolk water line inspection. Like many community gardens across the country, we are now being required to install a costly backflow valve to protect the city water main. The initial estimate for this addition is $2200 to include the valve, install, and casing to prevent theft. We are asking for community support to help us meet this new challenge. Water is the lifeblood of the garden and we need your help to keep our garden thriving.
On April 30, 2022, we opened the Downtown Norfolk Community Garden. Since opening, we have developed into one of the largest urban agriculture sites in Hampton Roads. We have accomplished a lot but need your help to build self-sufficiency. We need a reliable source of water. At the peak of summer, we were utilizing nearly 1000 gallons per week. While Freemason Street Baptist Church allowed us to fill our two 110-gallon cisterns, they were paying for both the water AND the sewage cost - doubling their water bill. To minimize this cost and labor to fill these cisterns, we need a stand-alone water line and spigot for landscaping. Between permitting, tie-in costs, and line installation, we anticipate a total cost of $4000. With your help, we will continue cultivating produce and community in our mixed-income garden.
