For those who do not know, Cameron and Kassi along with my 6-year-old grandson lived in a four-unit townhome in Windcrest that was completely destroyed by a fire early Monday morning (like 1 am).
The tenants in one of the other units were cooking falafels and started a cooking fire that grew out of control. First, the fire extinguisher failed and then the first fire truck to arrive at the scene had equipment failure and all of that led to the fire spreading quickly. Firefighters had to rely on help from other agencies after they realized the pump on their truck wasn’t working.
When I arrived at the chaotic scene, I found my daughter and my six-year-old grandson in their pajamas with no shoes and Cameron had a t-shirt, shorts, and sneakers. Their cat, Oreo also survived the fire. Whatever they had on is what survived this fire. You don't realize the severity until you are at Walmart at 4 am buying them the essentials like a toothbrush, socks, underwear, a change of clothes, a pair of flip flops, etc. Just so they could have clothes for the day. They are staying at my house. Despite everything, I am so grateful to God that they are alive and well, material things can be replaced, they can’t!
We went to see if we could salvage anything and there is not one thing we could salvage. Everything is gone!
Unfortunately, they only had liability insurance and they weren’t liable for starting the fire. According to the insurance adjuster, chances of them recovering any monies from the claim against the liable tenants are slim to none because of all the damages and the liability limits on the at fault tenant's policy.
Many have approached me and ask how they can help? And I am so grateful for your thoughtfulness and willingness, and I’m sure Cameron, Kassi, Lil Cam, and Oreo are too! They are in shock and right now it’s a little overwhelming when they think about the recovery process. They know there is little chance they could simply replace it all at one time, but even replacing the basics will require some cash. They have two goals. The first one is to replace basics so they can continue going to work and earning a living. The second is to get them back into an apartment. My grandson starts school soon and they want to provide a sense of normalcy. Right now, the best way to help them is with cash donations. Cash will allow them, to get exactly what they need at this moment and help them secure another apartment. Any amount will help and is greatly appreciated! Thank you in advance for your support!
