A Message from Evan

As a lifelong resident of Winston-Salem, I think my feelings on the COVID-19 pandemic and our impending community crisis reflect the feelings of many people. While I am willing to shelter in place, social distance, wear a mask, etc. I WANT to make an impactful difference in the lives of Winston-Salem’s Front Line.

There is a spontaneous yet collective grass roots movement called “Fuel the Fight” which began in Philadelphia and has now expanded to New York, Boston, Chicago, LA, Baltimore, DC, Denver, Austin, and, most likely more cities by the time you read this message.  Let’s bring “Fuel The Fight” to Winston-Salem together!

Our Goal
Our goal is to raise $30,000 in order to provide meals for doctors, nurses, and medical staff over a three-week period beginning this week. We have spoken with representatives from the major hospitals in Winston-Salem, and the need for this effort is immediate. Following the model used in other cities, Fuel the Fight Winston-Salem will spend $500 - $1,000 to feed 50-100 local doctors, nurses, and medical staff per meal served, approximately $10,000 weekly for a three-week period. All meals will be purchased at Winston-Salem restaurants thus supporting our local economy.

EVERY SINGLE DOLLAR not only will support our city’s restaurants thus bolstering their diminished business and our local economy but also will support our brave fellow citizens on the front line.

How It Works
Each week, we will coordinate with our partner hospitals to create a food and delivery schedule, which will be posted on this site. For example, on Monday we may provide breakfast to the clinic testing for COVID-19, and lunch to the Emergency Department team. Our goal is to provide as many meals as possible per week, contingent on funding.

We set up a Fuel the Fight - Winston-Salem bank account, and have a new debit card linked to that account. For each meal, Evan will use the debit card linked to the Fuel the Fight - Winston-Salem account and partner with a local restaurant to provide 50-100 individually packaged meals. Restaurant personnel will place the meals in our truck, and we will drive them directly to the hospital, where hospital staff will remove the meals from our vehicle, ensuring no unnecessary contact with the food between preparation and delivery.

Every dollar spent and every receipt will be accounted for by Fuel the Fight Winston-Salem. At this time we are unable to offer tax-deductible receipts, but depending on our program’s growth we might investigate partnerships that allow for this.

The citizens of Winston-Salem are awesome! Together let’s make a meaningful impact in our community during this challenging time. Please join this effort by donating any amount.
