Help SAFE Surgery provide life-saving surgery in Uganda
Donation protected
More than 16 million people die every year from lack of access to surgical care, the vast majority in developing countries and many of them pregnant women and children. Many of these deaths are preventable if people have punctual access to a facility with trained surgical staff and adequate medical-surgical supplies.
As a result and alongside our Ugandan colleagues, Richard and I are co-founding a new organization called SAFE Surgery to provide safe, accessible, fast, and equitable surgical treatment to those who need it, regardless of race, age, gender, ability to pay, or anything else. We are working to address the Three Delays, ensuring that people know when and how to access surgical care, that they have the physical and financial means to reach that care, and that when they get to a healthcare facility, it is equipped with the supplies, equipment, and trained staff needed to provide high-quality and time-sensitive care.
Capitalizing on our 12 years of experience working in Uganda prior to the pandemic, we will be returning to Uganda in May 2025 to officially launch SAFE Surgery. This area has only one credentialed surgeon who works tirelessly to serve hundreds of patients each week while also training as many other providers as possible in appropriate surgical technique. Yet, given the volume of cases and training needs, he needs both clinical and public health help from U.S. professionals as well as financial support to fill equipment gaps and transform the local healthcare system. We are raising money to meet the following urgent needs during this inaugural trip as we explore setting up a 501c3 organization in the longer term:
- Supplies and equipment, such as a portable ultrasound machine, vein finder, pulse oximetry, vital sign monitors, laparotomy and craniotomy sets, wound dressings, surgical mesh, stoma bags, scrubs, OR shoes, sterile gloves, and gauze
- Materials to train Ugandan healthcare providers in the essential surgical care
- Funding to support emergency referral programs, where local motorcycle drivers are trained and networked to provide immediate transfer to an appropriate health facility
- Funding to pay for care when a family cannot afford it and where delays for them to raise it will result in death
Please help us help others this Holiday season. Any donation would be greatly appreciated.
