Help save our Padre Island Wildlife Sanctuary

The Audubon Outdoor Club of Corpus Christi Inc., a 501 (C) (3) registered non-profit organization, hopes to purchase an additional property adjacent to our 11-acre Packery Channel Oak Motte Wildlife Sanctuary. This wonderful tract contains some of the oldest remaining Coastal Live Oak woodlands on the entire 120-mile-long Padre Island coast.

This area is a critical stopover habitat for migrating birds that have to fly over the Gulf of Mexico going to and from Central/South America. A trip that can be 600 to 700 miles over water without being able to stop for food or water! Amazingly, many of these tiny neotropical migrants can make that a non-stop flight but are exhausted, dehydrated, and nearly starving by the time they reach our coast. Places like the Oak Motte Sanctuary are key to their survival. At least 260 species of birds have been documented to use this to rest and refuel.

Do you realize that according to the National Audubon Society, 2.9 billion or about 30% of the USA's migratory birds have been lost since 1970? Most of this population decline can be directly attributed to habitat loss. With this in mind, we feel it is essential that we preserve this beautiful example of Live Oak woodlands while we have the chance.

The Audubon Outdoor Club of Corpus Christi has been offered this property at below-market value by the seller who is moving out of the area. The sellers have maintained and improved the property for wildlife for many years. Because they also do not want to see the property bulldozed and developed, they have given us a brief time to raise the funds for this highly desirable residential property before it is listed and snapped up by a developer who will need to bulldoze the lot for yet another vacation home or Airbnb. Once the property is "developed" the habitat is lost forever.
