Dr. Oscar Hilt Tatum Jr., a pioneering figure in implant dentistry, passed away on February 17, 2025 at the age of 90. Born on April 22, 1934, Dr. Tatum’s innovative contributions have left an indelible mark on the field of dental surgery.
After attending Opelika High School he earned his dental degree from Emory University Dental School in 1957. Dr. Tatum then embarked on a lifelong career that would revolutionize dental implantology. He was the first clinician to perform a sinus lift procedure, a groundbreaking technique that has since become a standard practice in dental surgeries. His commitment to advancing dental science led him to secure a U.S. patent for the sinus lift method in 1998. He also designed the first 2 stage titanium root form system in the USA in 1978 as well as the Vascularized Osteotomy Concept in 1982 and was the originator of “NIRISAB” Concept in 2003.
Dr. Tatum’s passion for education was evident through his over 2000 podium presentations around the world and his numerous faculty appointments across the United States. Notably, he dedicated 25 years to teaching at The Lille University School of Medicine in France. His leadership roles included serving as President of both the American Academy of Implant Dentistry and the American Board of Oral Implantology. In recognition of his significant contributions, French President Jacques Chirac awarded him The French Legion of Honor in 2003.
Dr. Tatum’s enduring impact on dental implantology and his unwavering commitment to patient care has set a standard of excellence. His innovative spirit and dedication to education will continue to inspire future generations in the field of dentistry.
Dr Tatum was born in Opelika, AL on April 22, 1934. He attended Opelika High School, Auburn University, and Emory University Dental School. He was a member of Sigma Alpha Epsilon Social Fraternity, a past President of the Opelika Rotary Club, and a member of the St Petersburg, FL, and Les Andelys, France Rotary Clubs.
He was preceded in death by his parents Dr. Oscar Hilt Tatum and Corinne Smith Tatum of Opelika, his sons Dr Oscar Hilt Tatum III and Thomas A. Tatum, and a grandson Jean Mules. He is survived by his beloved Roswitha who has been by his side for 37 years, and his children Corinne Hurst (Jimmy), Dr. Jim Tatum (Dottie), Caroline Tatum Pugh (Michael), and Martine Barbareau. His grandchildren James B. Hurst, Jr., Oscar Hilt Tatum IV (Sarah), Ashley Hurst Underwood (Phil), Lauren Tatum Capra (Chaz), Victoria Pugh Keir (Graham), Cara Pugh Keys (Greg), Davis Tatum, Hannah Tatum McDonald (Jared), Rachel Marshall (Rob), Tatum Pugh, and Emma, Nora and Mallory Tatum, Jules Mules (Samia), and 11 great-grandchildren.
Graveside services will be held at Garden Hill Cemetery at 3 pm on March 1, 2025, in Opelika, AL. Visitation will be at the graveside at 2 pm. The service will be moved to the Chapel at Jeffcoat Trant Funeral Home if inclement weather. JeffcoatTrant.com
