Injury & Medical Expenses
Beschermde donatie
On Monday morning, October 22, 2018, my little brother Derek Maddox, carpenter by trade, kissed his wife and three kids good bye and headed off to work. He has been working on restoring a historic farm house in Vinland, Kansas since November of 2017. Derek was making back cut 45-degree cuts on stair trim when the accident happened. The board kicked and his left hand entered into the table saw, severely damaging his left pinky, ring, and middle fingers. Derek was rushed to the hospital in Lawrence, Kansas and then sent on to see an orthopedic surgeon. The orthopedic surgeon temporarily reattached his fingers to minimize swelling overnight in preparation for surgery the next day. During the 2.5 hour surgery, the surgeon pinned all three fingers to hold the bones in place and repaired the tendons, arteries, and nerves microscopically. After the surgery, the surgeon told Derek that recovery will be a process, not an event. He may still lose his entire little finger and part of his middle finger. Rehabilitation will be long term and could impact his ability to work for up to a year. Derek is a self-employed carpenter in Baldwin City, Kansas and is expected to be unable to work for a minimum of 8 weeks. With no workers compensation insurance on himself, the 2 months will be difficult on the entire family with the loss of income and overwhelming medical expenses. All donations are greatly appreciated.
