Please Help Cover Comet's Vet Bills
At 11am on Sunday, August 29, Comet was hanging out with his mama in his backyard, soaking in some sun, when some gunshots ran out. Quickly after, the gate to the backyard opened and Comet ran to greet his new friend! The new friend, however, was not interested in joining Comet for a sunbathing session and instead, shot Comet (the police believe it was a .22). Comet screamed and cried very loudly as his new potential friend ran away, back into the street. Comet then ran back to his mama, who ushered him into the house, then shut and locked the door. He pushed open the door to the basement and crawled into his basement bunker spot, where he often hides during the thunder storms.
Quickly, his fan club in the house came running down in response to his screams. While his mama was on the phone with 911, his fan club checked out his wounds and noted that the bullet appeared to have gone in near his shoulder blade and out near his groin. He was obviously in pain, but not bleeding heavily. Once the police arrived, his mom carried him to the car and a hero neighbor drove him to the hospital.
The team at Angell brought him into the back, got him stabilized, and called in the surgeon.
First update @ 12: While waiting for the surgeon to arrive, Comet was able to stand, meaning the bullet missed his spine. Original estimate for surgery: $5208-9688.
Second update @ 1: The bullet tore through Comet's kidney and spleen, which will need to be removed. It also went through his small and large intestines, causing sepsis. The vet provided a slightly less than 50% chance of survival. Adjusted estimate is $11450-17300.
Third update @ 4: Vet called to say Comet is out of surgery. He is stable, but critical. They had to remove his spleen, a kidney, and large pieces of his colon. He is up to a 50/50 chance of survival.
More updates to come.
If you know Comet's mama at all, you've probably heard about her gush (endlessly) about how perfect Comet is. If you've met him, you know that she's not lying. He is truly the sweetest, most loving pup. Rescued in 2019 by West Memphis Animal Alliance, Comet spent five long months in the shelter before being pulled by Last Hope K9 Rescue and transported up to Boston. His mama fostered him briefly before realizing he was her soulmate. He is currently a foster brother to Rescue Inc puppers. Since his adoption (and even long before it was official), he has been the happiest, most-loved pup in the world. He loves butt scratches, jerky treats, getting tucked under blankets, and every human he meets.
Need some memory jogging of how fantastic he is?
Comet obviously has an instagram account that will help.
