Patricia and Eugenio Cervera are from Colombia and they have two sons, Alejandro (20) and Lucas (17). Last Saturday, Patricia and Eugenio received that dreadful phone call that no parent ever wants to hear, a call from the hospital. At around midnight on June 1st, they were informed that their son Lucas had been involved in a tragic car accident and suffered from a traumatic brain injury. Lucas is currently in a coma and in critical condition fighting for his life at the Foothills Medical Centre in Calgary, Alberta. His parents are undergoing an immense amount of stress both emotionally and financially as they are trying to make ends meet while being there to support their son. Below is the rest of their story, please feel free to share and donate, every little bit means the world to Lucas and his family.

Patricia and Eugenio Cervera are from Colombia and they have two sons, Alejandro (20) and Lucas (17). They are hard working, honest people and have a beautiful family. They arrived in Canada approximately 7 years ago, looking for a more promising future and better opportunities for their boys, as many other immigrants do. They lived in Quebec for a number of years and a couple of years ago they decided to move to Calgary, still in the search for new opportunities. After a long refugee humanitarian claim process, they were granted their Canadian PR status about 3-4 months ago. Patricia and Eugenio are both working in cleaning services and at the same time making sacrifices to attend school to improve their English language proficiency. Meanwhile, the boys are attending school, Lucas is currently in grade 11 and well loved by his peers.  Alejandro has a passion for cooking and is starting his culinary career. Both boys work part-time to help their family with the finances at home.

On the night of June 1st, Lucas was with some friends heading to a get-together. Lucas and some of his friends were riding in the bed of a pick-up truck when, due to a sudden acceleration by the driver, Lucas was propelled from the truck. When the driver realized what had happened he reversed the vehicle and then proceeded forward, running Lucas over twice with the rear tires in the process. The tires caused severe damage to the upper portion of Lucas’ body, specifically his head and neck. Lucas suffered major head trauma and is currently in a coma, and 100% dependant on life support to keep him alive. Lucas had brain surgery a few hours after being admitted, but unfortunately, they had to stop the surgery as his vital signs were too weak to continue.  Due to the injuries he sustained, his lungs and heart are also compromised and after 72 hours in the hospital, he is still in “critical” condition. He is showing some signs of activity, some body movement and appears to be uncomfortable with some of the tubes in his body, and even though these are all “good signs,” the doctors have been cautious providing a very uncertain prognosis. Lucas is currently at the Foothills Hospital in Calgary where the doctors continue to monitor him and are doing all they can to keep him alive. His family and friends are all praying for him and hoping that he has the strength to recover.

Patricia and Eugenio are devoting all their time and efforts to be close to Lucas during this time, and this is, of course, creating great emotional and financial distress. Eugenio and Patricia have no other family in Canada, and their circle of friends is small due to their short amount of time here. As with many immigrants, they have a very limited support group. Due to this tragedy, Patricia and Eugenio have been unable to go back to work in order to dedicate their time to being by their sons’ side during his recovery. A small group of friends is appealing to the community at large to ask for any support to ensure that the family is able to make ends meet during this difficult time. We ask that you please share Lucas’ story and help support him and his family in any way you can, every little bit helps.  We thank you in advance for your thoughts and prayers and are grateful for every share, prayer, and donation.
