Making Nepal Greener - Planting trees in Banepa

Hi, we at Treehope Travel Limited are working together with "Tree man", Rashil, of Banepa, Nepal - to help him on his journey to make the city greener.

Nepal is an incredibly diverse country, but many of its trees and jungle have been lost in the past few decades to make room for farming, new roads and buildings.

I met Rashil in 1998 when we worked with Street kids in Kathmandu.

He lives in Banepa, an hour from Kathmandu and has a huge passion for trees and turning the city there greener. He's planted several thousand trees around the city and we are currently working on a new planting project to implement in June and before the monsoon each year.

In 2024 we've managed to plant around 400 3-4 year old trees. We need to plant bigger trees like this because small trees are too delicate in the city - something Rashil has tried and tested over time!

Rashil always plants new trees for any that are lost along the way.

Each hole is pre-dug, filled with organic matter and small root ball trees are planted.

This involves quite a few of the locals - from the houses where cow manure is collected, to the people paid to dig, the bamboo purchased and cut and the volunteers that help along the way.

It brings the community together and provides work and income to some of the local suppliers too!
