WHAT HAPPENED

On June 20th, 23-year-old Donghoon Lee went to Lake Chelan to enjoy his summer vacation with two of his beloved friends. As the harsh wind blew unexpectedly while he was swimming in the water, he was swept away by a swift current. Four days have passed as of today, June 25th, and we have been unable to recover his body. It truly breaks our heart knowing that Donghoon has been in the cold water for four whole days, and we are currently utilizing every method available to bring him up to the surface.

Donghoon Lee/ Dylan H Lee

Donghoon had the most beautiful and caring soul. Donghoon’s family and friends, and even those who were merely familiar with his name, saw him as a bright, young man full of passion, leadership, affection, and humor. Donghoon’s personality impressed everyone in the community and, as a result, Donghoon was selected to serve as the Korean Student Union President at the University of Washington this year.

Outside of school, Donghoon was a lovable, humorous person who brought continual joy into the lives of those around him. Donghoon took his camera with him everywhere he went and created videos that captured such beautiful memories with his loved ones. Donghoon was someone who would bring the thoughts of his passionate daydreams to real life. Donghoon produced exceptionally creative music videos that reflected his philosophies. Donghoon, who practically stayed glued to his longboard, would take frequent naps on his longboard when the sun was out.  Donghoon’s talent and passion for fashion, art, and photography exceeded everyone we had ever met.

His Family in Korea

Donghoon is a late and only child in his family. His parents have been educators for many years teaching in a middle school and a high school and have only a few years ahead of them before retirement. Donghoon’s family was elated and looking forward to his visit next week. Now, Donghoon’s parents are in a state of immense shock. After hearing the tragic news over a phone call in Korea, Donghoon’s parents are rushing to the United States in order to be with their beloved son. Donghoon was the best son his parents could have ever asked for. Playing badminton with his dad was his favorite thing to do. Donghoon always longed to share the beautiful cherry blossom of the University of Washington with his mom in Korea.

Donghoon’s sudden absence is heart-rending to all of us. But he will forever be in our hearts and minds. At this time, we ask that you aid us with not only with emotional support, but also financial support for the necessary expenses to search for his body and send him off to a better place.

This funding is going directly to Donghoon's family to help pay for costs expended on the search, the funeral and other various financial challenges. Please help us to bring back our friend to his loved one. Any form of support is greatly appreciated.

Thank you.

Management of these grateful funds

My name is Chiho Kim. I am an international student from South Korea and I am currently enrolled in University of Washington, Seattle. I am Donghoon Lee's closest friend and roommate.

This funding will be used to aid Donghoon's family; I will send the amount in full to his father and it will be used for the following:
  1. Support the Chelan Police (if permitted) for hiring
    professional/county-certified divers and renting
additional equipment to recover Donghoon’s body.
  2. Make an appointment with/hiring a lawyer.
  3. Have a funeral if Donghoon is confirmed and
    reported deceased.
  4.  Donghoon’s parents' travel and
    accommodation fees.

I have listed out some options, but the way in which the money is spent will solely be determined by his father. If not for a specific purpose, the money will be given to his family as an expression of our deepest condolences.

I intend to deposit the money directly to Donghoon's Bank of America VISA card to which I used to send my apartment rent. Donghoon's wallet had been kept in the Consulate General of the Republic of Korea in Seattle and was returned to his father when he arrived in the US on June 25th.

Gratitude

We want to give our utmost gratitude to our contributors. We, Donghoon’s closest friends, were bit unsure how to lead this fundraising successfully. Fortunately, we have received so many words of encouragement and donations from many people along with their condolences. Also, we would like to express immense appreciation to the warmhearted people who offered integral forms of support such as rides and accommodations. Shares on the Facebook post helped spread our message and it is still being shared by many friends. Such an outcome is a miracle made by all of those who contributed. Donghoon and his family will be truly grateful for this incredible support. Once again, we have nothing but gratitude and participation towards those who supported Donghoon and his family, thank you.
