PART II: The Road To Recovery

Can we raise another $6000 in 2019 and get Pat to the finish line?
First, a huge thank you to all who kicked in to help Pat with her mountain of medical bills in 2018. Because of the generosity of so many kind souls who made contributions to her GoFundMe page, Pat came close to reaching her goal and was able to keep up with most of those 2018 bills.
Although we have not seen “official” updates or heard much about Pat’s progress in the last several months, the fact remains it has been a long and difficult journey. In typical Patricia Moyer fashion, however, she has persevered through the worst of it, and tried to work as much as possible (unfortunately she did lose about 25% of work hours in 2018 which had a serious impact on her income). In spite of that, Pat has remained optimistic, rarely losing her sense of humor and upbeat attitude. Also, in typical Pat fashion, she confided in me that, post-hurricane Florence, she did not want to post updates or suggest anyone contribute to her when so many in our community were –and still are - hurting.
As December approached, with more treatments and tests, Pat’s optimism rarely faltered and, feeling stronger and more determined than ever, she entered the new year ready to kick butt. Her weakened immune system had other plans however, and a nasty respiratory infection in January put Pat out for a while, postponing treatment, and costing her more time at work. That was followed in February by a corneal abrasion and eye infection that kept her out of work yet again. March and April have seen a continuation of chemo side effects which hopefully will lessen in the future.
While 2019 brings the light at the end of this long, dark tunnel, it also brings a fresh set of bills. With the new deductible of $8500 starting in December, more treatments, an echocardiogram, and a follow up visit with the surgeon before year’s end, Pat’s medical bills in early 2019 totaled the entire amount of her deductible.
…Not exactly the happiest way to start the New Year…
That’s why I encouraged her to reach out once again to ask folks to open their hearts - and their wallets – just one more time to help her meet that new deductible. We’ve added $6,000 to what was raised last year, hoping that will enable her to focus every single ounce of her energy on the healing process and getting through what we all hope will be the final leg of this journey. I know that she is incredibly grateful to everyone who has helped her during the past year.
Let’s all get her to the victory lap!

Join Patricia Moyer's Rally Against Cancer
If you know Pat, you know she does not take a back seat when it comes to supporting her family, her friends, and the causes that are important to her and her community
You may have fond memories of times with Pat in PA or NJ, or maybe, like me, you’ve gotten to know her here in Wilmington, NC. We’ve been to many a rally together, supporting some of those important causes. And now I’m reaching out, asking others to join me in rallying around Patricia.
Pat recently received news no one wants to hear. She has cancer - breast cancer - and is facing a long and difficult battle. I am sure she has no intention of taking a backseat in this fight either, but she’ll need our help!
Pat has Invasive Ductal Carcinoma, and it is aggressive. She will need surgery in the future. Pat started chemotherapy treatment in early April, and by late summer, hopefully will be a candidate for a less invasive surgery. That procedure would be followed in a month or so by weeks of radiation. Meanwhile scans, office visits and infusions will continue well into 2019. Doctors will monitor her condition throughout, and changes in treatment will be made as needed. Following this regimen, Pat will continue with some form of medication, possibly an aromatase inhibitor for five or more years.
Wow...facing all that and knowing you will have two years of insurance deductibles to pay out of pocket - plus other medical expenses - while your car needs repairs, your rent is about to increase, your utilities and other expenses continue, and missed days of work are already translating into missed wages, recognizing there will be many more to follow...
That's a lot to take on, even for a fighter like Pat.
Our goal is to raise at least $8500 ~Pat’s insurance deductible for 2018.
That covers just one year of the deductible, it does not cover other medical expenses for 2018.
Pat has touched so many of us in so many ways, enriching our lives with her presence, her humor and optimism, and her beautiful smile. I hope all of you will join me in supporting her through this challenging time.
Together we can ensure that her focus is on beating this disease without having to worry about how to pay the bills.
The goal is $8500, but there will, of course, be other medical and living expenses, so please know that any amount is appreciated.
Sharing this will be really important in helping us reach our goal, so we kindly ask that you share wherever reasonable. Our original goal was 100 shares, but since we've already surpassed that --
We’d love to have 300 shares by the end of June!
