Survivors Library Festival

Donation protected
Survivors Library is raising money to create a festival to support and celebrate survivors of trauma, abuse, and assault, and the people who care about them. We’ll be hosting a day of workshops, talks, art, performances, a collection of books, zines, and comics, and stalls for survivors and non-survivors, with a focus on Scottish organisations and individuals.

There are social structures and cycles of abuse that reinforce and perpetuate trauma. Together, we can work to understand and dismantle them, and to improve the lives of survivors and their loved ones. Everyone knows a survivor of trauma - even if you’re not one, a family member, partner, or friend will be. Join us in making a difference in our lives.

We aim to provide space and resources for survivors, especially those who are harmed by racism, transphobia, immigration policy, anti-sex work sentiments, ableism, classism, sexism, homophobia or anti-LGBTQIA sentiments, and other forms of oppression.

How we’ll spend your donations

We want to keep the event attendance "pay what you can" (including free for those who need it) while paying everyone involved in making it happen. We aim to host in a wheelchair accessible venue with space for both a creche and quiet room, to ensure that everyone who wants to attend the festival can come.

The most important cost is the venue hire (~£750) without which the event will not go ahead and donations will be refunded. All other funds raised up to and beyond our target will go towards:

• Workshops, talks, and performances (~£1500)
• Creche (~£550)
• Exhibition and resource library
• Refreshments
• Promotional materials and signage
• Organisers and event staff
Post-event publication, documenting what we made and how

Our Goals

With the festival, we aim to:

• Bring survivors together, fostering community and fighting isolation
• Celebrate and empower survivors, their projects, and creativity by providing spaces and activities that are positive, healing, and fun
• Educate both non-survivors and survivors on how to provide support, recognise trauma and its impacts, seek or suggest professional help, and how to stop trauma, abuse, and assault
• Make resources and tools that are accessible to survivors and non-survivors with our library and a variety of workshops, stalls, and talks
• Provide opportunities that support and develop survivors’ professional and creative practice, including collaboration, new projects, and being paid to run workshops
• Challenge and discuss stigmas, taboos, misconceptions, and oppressive rhetoric around survivors’ experiences and the causes of trauma
• Introduce Scottish audiences to art and information to which they wouldn’t otherwise have had access to
• Explore definitions and experiences of trauma, raising awareness of how widespread it is - everyone knows someone who has survived trauma, abuse, or assault

Festival Programme

Our list of workshops and talks is growing by the day! Some examples are:

• Life modelling and drawing for survivors
• What is Justice? Bodywork, games, and discussion
• In front of the lens: Photography and LGBTQIA+ Trauma
• Creative writing for sexual and domestic abuse survivors
• Prison Abolition and Transformative Justice Panel
• Supporting male survivors of abuse

Stalls, Socials, and Art Space:

• Meet local organisations, artists, and activist groups
• All day drop-in arts and zine making table
• Browse artwork in our temporary gallery
• Social area with timings to talk about specific issues

Our growing collection of resources by, for, and about survivors will be available to browse in our quiet space, where you can take a break from the rest of the event.

Time and Place

The event will be in Edinburgh, Scotland in July 2020.

It will be open to everyone except abusers, and anyone engaging in abusive or oppressive behaviour will be asked to leave the space. We will not tolerate transphobia, racism, anti-sex work sentiments, fatphobia, ableism, classism, sexism, abuse or assault apologism, homophobia or anti-LGBTQIA sentiments, or other forms of oppression.

About Survivors Library

Survivors Library is a group of survivors who collect and create resources by, for, and about survivors of trauma, abuse, and assault, and the people who care about them. We believe survivors deserve access to resources that don’t perpetuate harm and oppression, and that everyone should have access to information on how to support and care for survivors.

We don’t allow anything that promotes transphobia, racism, anti-sex work sentiments, fatphobia, ableism, classism, sexism, abuse or assault apologism, homophobia or anti-LGBTQIA sentiments, other forms of oppression, or content created by abusers.

We prioritise the collection and creation of resources by, for, and about survivors who experience those oppressions. We aim to question, challenge, and dismantle oppressive structures in society that contribute to and intersect with trauma.
