Hello, we are Team Food Super Heroes. Thank you in advance for taking the time to consider helping with our cause. I have seen firsthand how families can struggle to put food on the table to feed their family. Raising four children was not easy, and some years were harder than others. The last thing any parent wants to see is their child hungry, and there's nothing you can do. The U.S. has programs to help needy families with assistance programs, helping them until they can get on their feet again. Other countries outside the U.S. do not have these programs available to help them. This is where and how we can help families and get them fed.

A basic physiological need that everyone has and NEEDS to survive is not so simple for everyone. Food insecurity is a condition of not having enough or the right kinds of food available to support a healthy body.

Action Against Hunger takes a tailored approach to address communities in need. Our donations not only help feed those in need, but additional resources are also used to help start up local markets. They also help communities create sustainable food sources.

The hunger in our society is a concerning social issue. Many homeless people here in the US don’t have enough food to eat and go to bed hungry. Raising awareness is important so that we help our community out through food banks and donations. A good portion of the US population are living paycheck to paycheck, and many are homeless and with food insecurities, not knowing when/where their next meal is going to come from. Inflation has gotten out of control, exacerbating the problem of hunger in America and abroad. Having healthy food to eat is a basic human right that cannot be ignored.

Right now, millions of people across the U.S. are facing hunger, an issue that is both heartbreaking and urgent. Families, children, and even seniors are struggling to get enough food to sustain themselves every single day. Despite living in a country with abundant resources, the reality of hunger persists. As difficult to comprehend, yet it is true: hunger is real, and it is happening all around us right now.

We, a group of students from the University of North Texas, have been working on a class project for our social engineering course. We chose to partner with Action Against Hunger because we care deeply about ending hunger. We believe no one should have to go to bed hungry, no matter what.

Why Hunger is Such a Big Problem

Almost 1 in 9 people in the U.S. struggle with food insecurity—that’s over 38 million lives, including 11 million children. It’s devastating to imagine a country where food overflows, so many families don’t have enough to eat. The problem isn’t the lack of food; it’s that millions simply can’t afford it, and it is a reality that worsens with every new global crisis.

Right now, hunger isn’t something that can wait. We can’t sit around and hope it gets better on its own. We need to act, and we can make a difference—if we all come together, we can fight hunger and create change.

Water, Sanitation & Hygiene included some partial Research & Innovation

As water and sanitation are basic human rights, many people sadly do not have access to them. Just picture the day-to-day crises and dangers that families today face due to the sheer lack of basic necessities. We're gathering funding towards providing clean water, safe sanitation, and restoring a sense of dignity to the needy.

Emergency Response

In times of crisis, every instant counts. Action Against Hunger creates urgency in rushing their food, clean water, and emergency treatment on the front lines whenever there is a natural disaster or humanitarian crisis. We are able through your assistance, to go beyond simply being providers of immediate care and instead focus on the building blocks necessary for real change in communities. My name is Fernando Martinez. I’m a senior at Woodrow Wilson High School in Long Beach. I have a school project that I have to do to help the world, and I decided to choose action against hunger because a lot of people are blessed and have the opportunity to donate to the people that need the help and donations.

Action Against Hunger is committed to saving lives by eliminating hunger through the prevention, detection, and treatment of malnutrition. Our mission is to save lives and build resilient communities by addressing the root causes of hunger. We work in emergency situations caused by conflict, war, and natural disasters, as well as in long-term development contexts to ensure sustainable change.

The Social Issue:

Hunger is a critical issue that affects nearly 40% of the world’s population. Every night, 733 million people go to bed hungry. Malnutrition is responsible for nearly half of all deaths in children under five, claiming the lives of more than two million children each year. Addressing this issue is crucial because hunger not only affects physical health but also impedes cognitive development, economic productivity, and overall quality of life (AAH, 2024).

Child Mortality: 50% of child deaths are linked to hunger.

Our Impact:

Action Against Hunger’s proven solutions save lives. We provide emergency food assistance, clean water, and health services to those in need. Our programs reach 24 million people annually, and 90% of every dollar donated goes directly to our field programs. We work with local communities to ensure sustainable change, empowering them to grow their own food, raise livestock, and improve their health (AAH, 2024).

A Story of Hope:

Meet Amina, a mother from Kenya. Severe drought had left her community without food or water. Amina’s youngest child was severely malnourished when our team found them. Thanks to the support of donors like you, we were able to provide Amina’s family with the nutrition and medical care they needed to survive. Today, Amina’s child is healthy and thriving, a testament to the power of compassion and generosity (AAH, 2024).

Action Against Hunger is a global non-profit organization which leads the world in the ongoing fight against hunger by providing access to food, clean water, and sustainable solutions in over 45 countries.

Action Against Hunger tackles global hunger, an extremely important social issue which affects an estimated “35% of the global population” (Concern Worldwide U.S., 2024).

Malnutrition remains one of the most prevalent issues among youth on a global scale. According to the World Health Organization (WHO) in 2023, “nearly half of deaths among children under 5 years old are linked to malnutrition.”

Poverty is simultaneously a cause and effect of malnutrition. The World Health Organization emphasizes that “people who are poor are more likely to be affected by different forms of malnutrition,” and that malnutrition can result in snowballing issues such as increased healthcare costs and reduced productivity/increased lethargy, both of which only perpetuate the cycle of poverty and malnutrition. By supporting Action Against Hunger, donors can help to interrupt and put a stop to this cycle by directly providing for those in need.

The Disasters & Emergencies that hit the world unexpectedly ; forces displacement, disruption of food production, causes damages to infrastructure and increases health risk. “Cyclone Batsirai left thousands of people in severe and urgent need of aid in Madagascar. Our teams stepped up to help, especially in the east, where destroyed harvests could cause hunger” (Action Against Hunger, n.d.-b). Addressing these challenges requires coordinated efforts to provide immediate relief and support long-term recovery and resilience-building in affected communities, Action Against Hunger aims to mitigate the impact of disasters and help communities become more resilient.

The money we make from our campaign will be donated to the organization's page via their preferred method. Once our donation is submitted the organization splits the donations up in many ways. $0.90 of every dollar donated goes directly to their field programs. Every $50 raised funds a full course of Ready-To-Use Therapeutic Food (RUTF)(Action Against Hunger, 2024).

Nour’s Story

We would like to highlight an article published by Action Against Hunger which follows a young lady named Nour during her time of struggle because of war in Lebanon. On October 8, 2023, Nour moved into her new home as a new bride alongside her husband. Tragically, that was the same day that the crisis in Lebanon really began, and their new home was destroyed in an airstrike only days later. For Nour, the loss was devastating - not only did they lose their new home, they lost memories and security. “It felt like all the hard work and effort we put into choosing every corner of that house was lost,” she said (Action Against Hunger, 2024). Nour has seen more than many would believe, yet she says that although she has been displaced there are others who have it worse. It was during this hardship that Action Against Hunger began providing support to those displaced by the conflict, and Nour was able to witness the impact that the food, clean water and hygiene kits had on the community. Nour now continues to work with Action Against Hunger in an effort to help others receive the same help she once needed. By supporting our campaign, you can directly help Action Against Hunger provide assistance to people like Nour; together, we can help provide the resources they need to survive and rebuild.

This is a question that affects people of all ages. You’ve been there. Our children have been there. We’ve all been there at some point in our life. It takes kindness to make a difference. In fact, anyone can make a difference. “The Hunger Heroes” is reaching out to all heroes across the world in this great effort to unite and aid those in need for food securities.

Where Will The Money Go?

Action Against Hunger works across 55 countries, reaching over 28 million people. They provide aid to some of the world’s most food insecure countries including Burkina Faso, Mali, Sudan, South Sudan and many others. In addition to that, they provide immediate relief to countries in times of crisis such as war. Currently they are working to provide emergency food deliveries to citizens of Gaza. Not only does Action Against Hunger provide immediate relief for hunger, they also work to partner with communities to improve food security by supporting local farmers and businesses to grow.

Our group is called Hungry Heroes. We were tasked with creating a page that can work alongside an organization of our choice. We selected Action Against Hunger because each of us believes in the message and efforts they are putting forward. Our vision is the not so easy task of ending world hunger. We believe that they can help “beat hunger one bite at a time.” Our mission is to increase clean and safe water, increase food security, increase research, and increase knowledge of health and nutrition within impoverished countries.

Let us tell you a story from the eye of 27-year-old Nyibol Mathiang Deng. She is a brave young refugee who faced what I could not even imagine. She was forced to flee because of war and risked her life and that of her unborn child. So, you might ask what Action Against Hunger has to do with this. They were there to support her. They provided her with food and clean water. She finally found her family with the help of Action Against Hunger and they now have hope, hope for a better future.

Why we seek donations:

Around 10% of the world's population faces world hunger. That is around 783 million people, 45 million of those being children. Around 9% go through severe malnutrition. This is when a person is so far removed from food that their bodies can no longer absorb the nutrients of what they are given. We seek to be able to drastically reduce these numbers. We do not look at those with lack as a statistic, but as people like us.

What the money will be utilized for:

All the proceeds collected from this project will be donated directly to the Action Against Hunger foundation.

The funds will be used to provide nourishment for those unable to provide for themselves.

The proceeds will be used to:

Give back to villages that have been ravaged by natural disasters

Allow our chosen foundation to partner with research organizations to better these villages' ability to raise and produce their own food.

Help bring proper medical care to those already suffering from malnutrition

Pay for machinery to be brought into villages so that wells can be dug. Allowing clean water for drinking, cooking, and washing

WMS Elementary is trying to help people that are starving in many countries, especially Chad, Afghanistan, Yemen, Ukraine, Somalia, and Madagascar. Our classroom is working hard studying what caused world hunger in these countries and what we can do about it. Based on our studies, most of the countries that are suffering the most in this matter are located in Africa, Southeast Asia, Central America, and western part of South America.

We chose this cause because we believe it is one of the important problems to resolve. Outside of this page, we will also be making posters to educate others, participating in a Walk-a-Thon, and hopefully more.
