2020 has been a crazy year, especially for Frontline workers. In all of the chaos, our community came together to feed us during the early months of the Pandemic. We were showered with kindness and food! We were also lucky to still have jobs and paychecks coming in. Many other people were not as lucky. Due to unemployment and loss of wages without relief, people are literally going hungry. The Hayward Drive up food bank (part of the Alameda County Food Bank Network)is experiencing food shortages and turning up to 200 cars away on distribution days. That’s 200 families, our neighbors, who are hungry! My Charge Nurse Rachel and I wanted to pay it forward by donating to the Alameda County Food Bank to try to avoid people being turned away. We’re raising money in aid of Alameda County Community Food Bank and every donation will help. Every $1 you donate will purchase $7 worth of food. 1 buck goes a long way!  The funds will be directly transferred from Gofundme to the Alameda County Community Food Bank. As all of you know, we lost a close friend and great person seven years ago.  Every year, the Whittaker family honors Reed's generous heart by gathering friends and family for a day of community service at the Alameda County Community Food Bank.  It's meant a lot to me to participate in this annual tradition and remember Reed in a way that reflects the central principle of Reed's life: helping others.  

This year, due to Covid and the recent birth of our daughter (Halle Reed Hersher), Stacy and I won't be able to participate in the day of service.  We struggled with the decision (as I'm sure others have), especially given the incredible needs of our community, but it's what right for us at this strange time in human history.

Still, we wanted to show our love for Reed and the Whittaker family by supporting them the way we're best able to at the moment--raising money to benefit Alameda County Community Food Bank.

The Food Bank has let us know that, due to Covid and related job loss, the need for food has doubled in Alameda County in the past year. And, for every $1.00 donated, two healthy meals can be provided.  That means any donation will make an impact.

With so much turmoil happening right now, we wanted to use our birthdays as a way to help the most vulnerable in our community.

The Alameda County Community Food Bank provides assistance to 49,000 people each week, including low-income adults, children, and the elderly. They also educate the community about the causes of hunger and poverty, advocate for policies to address the root causes of poverty, and operate an emergency food referral hotline.

As a pediatrician, it breaks my heart whenever I see a food insecure child in clinic. Food provides children with the energy to focus and bring their best selves to their school and communities. As parents, we cannot imagine how a parent or caregiver must feel when they cannot put food on the table for their families. 

We know this is a challenging time for everyone, but if anyone has extra financial resources to give, it would mean so much to us if you could help us band together to support a local organization that provides such a critical service to our community.

What better way to get outdoors and get some exercise while supporting our local food bank than by walking a marathon! So we four (Guneet, Saatchi, Luvreet, and Ankit) have planned to do just that by walking the entire Iron Horse Trail (27.2 miles) from Pleasanton to Concord on Sunday, May 3rd.
