We have recently modified our model here at The Donkey's Cross and are refocusing our efforts on becoming a sanctuary for the donkeys in our care. With that modification comes some additional challenges - we won't be rehoming animals so we know that they will have a safe happy life, however that adds significant cost to our annual expenses. Rescue and rehabilitation is a challenge and comes with a cost, but without the donations from adoption the cost lives completely with the rescue and its supporters. We recently took in 3 new Minis urgently due to medical issues with their owner. Their owner was unable to care for them and reached out for help. They came to us a couple of weeks ago and will stay as residents and they have been adding significantly to our expenses since they stepped off the trailer. They each have their own story to tell but as a group they are starting a new story here at the Donkey's Cross

Lloyd is a hinny - a cross between a horse and a donkey - he is our social butterfly and his favorite pastime is snuggling with his head on your shoulder and getting a pedicure (yes a pedi - he loves all attention)

He has moved around enough in his life so he is a life resident at the rescue - he isn't "all donkey" but that just makes his little A$$ even more special

We started with donkeys and he has grown a bit - we try to never say no so we have an assortment of rescued animals from rabbits, horses and a piggie.

We work hard every day to give the animals in our care everything they need - sometimes it's just a smooch from their favorite visitors but most things have a price tag :)

so any donation will help support their care and wellbeing of our friends here at the rescue and will also support our sanctuary residents that call our farm home.

Unexpected calls come at any time of the year. Our assistance was requested for a senior donkey that had sadly outlived her owner and needed placement. She had been living with a caring neighbor who needed help finding a new home for the donkey.

We drove across the state and loaded her up to travel to the rescue. To say that she is excited to see other donkeys is an understatement - she hasn't stopped smiling and snuggling since she got off the trailer.

We get calls weekly for donkey's in need of a soft landing, some are no longer able to be cared for my their owners and others are abandoned or in the line to slaughter.

when donkey's come to the farm they need to be separated from the herd for a period of time to manage any medical issues and confirm that they are healthy to prevent issues for the other donkey's at the farm. Their care and feeding is costly but we try our best to never say no.

Have you ever been the child in school so afraid to read out loud that you picked the shortest sentence or paragraph and broke you arm to get selected? I have.... and even through we rescue donkeys we have become a sanctuary for humans that need a non-judgemental friend. We have started our "read to a donkey" program for children's literacy - our young visitors visit the donkeys to socialize and many set for a bit and work on their language and reading skills by reading to their furry friends. We are a sanctuary for donkeys but we are now fundraising for a space to hold our reading program that is handicap accessible for all visitors. Our goal is $50,000 and this is outside our annual operations budget so we will be working on this for a while - any amount will help our cause!
